Pitch black pour split into 2 sample glasses. Big aroma of burnt malt and dark fruit. Taste of extreme soy sauce, ash and bitterness. Nothing sweet going on here. Left wanting so much more.

Pours black with dark tan head. Smells like rich coffee and sweet background. On first sip I thought something is missing, but the body is there and the carbonation seems just about right. Aftertaste is rich coffee and a little dry. Honestly it is a little bland and needs something more.

Bottle pour..dark black with filmy coating..light brown mocha color head..active carbonation at sides of snifter..aroma of espresso..iced coffee..caramel and a hint of cinnamon..abv is hidden very well..no trace..however overall the mouthfeel is somewhat thin..expecting more intense flavor profile that just isn’t happening..ok ris.....

Whole Foods, Bowery 355ml ($3): Pours opaque black with a creamy tan head. Aroma is chocolate, pine, fresh coffee, and a hint of booze. Taste is very smooth. The piny hops still taste fresh and nice. Nicely bitter and mildly sweet. There ain’t nothing extreme or brutal about this, as this is very nice and smooth. I could have probably chugged the entire bottle in one go if I had wanted to do so. A welcome surprise.

12oz bottle: pours an oily opaque black with a stringy-lacing froth of beige head. Has a fresh resiny hoppy nose with nice roasted barley notes. Starts with pretty good fullness and sweet toasted caramel with lots of dark chocolate and crisp piny hop bitterness before a smooth bittersweet finish. True to style and dangerously drinkable.

Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Really smooth, but surprisingly lacking in taste. A decent beer, I'd have to try again.

Seems lighter than the abv would suggest, it is low in body and flavor from what I can taste.

Drought. Tasted on 20 March 2013. Dark brown with brownish foamy head, roasted malt aroma, bitter roasted malt taste laced with coffee, bitter long finish.
