mgermani (862), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Jul 4, 2007 Pours a jet black with a thin but lasting, creamy head. Wonderful gingerbready aroma! Almost flavourless at first, but it opens up nicely with peppery hops & alcohol, some roasted malt, and a warming, satisfying finish. Creamy and light body, slightly thin but lingers in the throat quite nicely. Very smooth easy-drinking stout, a bit more hops would have been nice but otherwise commendable. BillKismet (1899), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 3, 2007 Dark chocolate-molasses viscosity with ring of head. Nose of raisins, chocolate, roast barley, coffee, black patent, all accentuated by the alcohol. Quite flat body, as the flavor underwhelms. Some chocolate and coffee, but a bit thin. Probably would benefit from being served on cask. joss (3632), Garching b. München, Germany Apr 3, 2008 Sampled @ Spinnakers. Very dark brown, creamy brown head
Roast coffee&chocolate flavor, light sugary.
Bitter roast in the nose.
Medium mellow mouthfeel.
Fairly acidic aftertaste.
pantani (1894), Salinas, California, USA Jul 7, 2007 Deep black with brown edges, light tan head. Aroma is licorice, coffee, chocolate, vinegar. Taste is almost like a port, dry, thin, licorice, light alcohol warming. frink (467), coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada Sep 16, 2007 Pour a dark brown with a thin skim of a head. Sweet malty aroma, fruit, chocolate, coffee. The taste is not what I was expecting.Quite chocolaty mild bitter hoppiness, roasted malt, soft yet present carbonation does get a little thin as it warms. It was ok. Trev (850), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA Feb 25, 2008 Bottle: Poured a nice black with a thin head.
Aroma was light, coffee and dark fruit.
Flavour was a little underwhelming at first but grew into it’s own. Again light coffee tones, some thin hop in the finish but body seemed a little flat.
For 7.5% there was practically no noticable alc flavour or aromas.
Probably better on tap...
Nate (2533), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 26, 2007 Hand pump sample at brewpub. Mild chocolate, coffee malt aroma with sort of a sour lactic quality. There’s that balsamic tang again, too. Not hoppy. Dark black-brown clear with foamy light tan lacing head. Medium watery body with light smooth carbonation. Starts sweet with raisin and chocolate, coffee and light molasses. Bit of alcohol with sweet smooth oaken finish. Very little nutty bitterness. Tastes much better than it smells. Light sweet finish and after. Oakes (8057), gone rambling, Vietnam Apr 20, 2007 A burgundy accent to the dark brown body. Loose head. Almond shell, hints of herbs, a bit of roast and light diacetyl feature in the nose. Sweet flavour with only hints of roast and chocolate.
