Draft to taster at FoBAB 2013, pours opaque black. Nose roast, toast, and chocolate. Slight green and vinous taste up front then roast and chocolate. Softer mouth. A little watery compared to rest of the company.

New year, new beer, this years version is great, thick, inky black, very nice bourbon notes, a bit hot but not terrible.

FOBAB ’12. Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is definitely bourbon forward with some decent chocolate notes, a bit of a woodiness, and a light roast with a few dark fruits. Flavor is similar. Fairly rich chocolate, a good amount of bourbon, a few dark fruits, some wood, and a moderate roastiness towards the end. Finishes pleasantly dry with some wood and roasts before leaving a lengthy aftertaste. Medium, smooth body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty solid, well balanced BA Imperial Stout. Nothing special, but nicely done and enjoyable.

FoBAB 2012: I was really pumped to try a BA Impy from a new Chicago brewer. In fact it was the first I tried after getting the beers from Pipeworks tasted. Looked the parts as it was basically opaque with an tan frothy head. The nose was greeted with lots of toasted, charred, bready and chocolate malts with a dash of coffee, leather, and pipe tobacco too. Some oak, bourbon, vanilla and dark fruits but seems well restrained in the aroma. The taste starts with a dark fruit prune and berry twang supported by chocolate and roasted malts. Some tannin and earthy notes more towards the finish with a very light bourbon undertone. The only bitterness found is from a coffee like bite, no hop presence found. The mouth feel is oily and smooth, thinned out by the barrel methinks. It is simply an okay brew that can be said "been there, done that better". Gotta say I was disappointing considering the "hype" within the Chicago beer circle.

Sampled at FoBAB 10 - 2012 (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich blackish pour, dark near opaque, with soem frothy brownish head, laces ok. Aromas are toasty, pretzel, gentle roast and cocoa. Some chocolate, pretzel, Koval oak, and smooth sweetness. Initial thicker, richer gentle oak and gentle spirit, Koval whiskey and roast, toast, caramel. Some cocoa, vanilla, and gentle coffee elements. Middle is a bit thicker, sweet, and black malts. Caramel, biscuits, toast. Backend and finish show more barrel, ashy roast, and bakers chocolate. Solid beer. Welcome to the Chicago scene, boys.

Sampled from the tap at FOBAB 2012. Pours near black with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of roasted malts with a hint of backing bourbon. Flavor starts with dark grains that grow in sweetness with some dark chocolate with some bourbon that grows as well.
