3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Clear, very dark amber with a nice, but short-lived tan head, and dots of lace. Clean brisk malt with a bit of caramel grows through the palate to a carbonated bitter finish. Very straight forward with a big flavor that somehow lacks in richness (must be the 6% abv). Not a problem. It drinks well.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours cola dark brown with red highlights -- head is cinnamon, fine-grained, and creamy. Nose is caramel, chocolate, and smoke. Extremely rich on the palate -- smoked espresso, sherry, and nutty notes with light carbonation. Round like a milk stout on the palate. This is excellent.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle, trade with umich03jm. Black pour, big tan head that goes quickly, light but interesting malt aroma with hints of caramel. Flavor is relatively light, as expected, consisting of malt, a little caramel, and just a touch of bitterness. Slight complexity, and a relatively good beer among the lagers I have tried.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Had in a dimpled mug on draft at the Blind Pig brewing company in Champaign, IL. Deliciously balanced, expertly crafted Schwarzbier, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite styles for the unique malt complexity offered. Pours a dark tan to black, minimal head, with a great smoothness of roasted malt and hop bitterness. Slightly sweet, and delicious to the last drop.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
16 oz bottle warmed to about 55F and served in a goblet. Pours dark black with ruby/mahogany highlights only seen when backlit. Has a thick tan head that soon settles to a lasting ring and partial coat. Smells of dark baked bread and roasted malts with some earthiness and spice from the hops and hints of dark fruits and chocolate.
Roasted malts dominate in a flavor that could be a porter. Not only considerably less sweet than a typical Schwarzbier, but a bit more bitter than sweet. This bitterness is mild, however, even in the coffee-tinged finish. Both finish and aftertaste provide a substantial contribution of very dark-roasted grain flavor.
Smooth and creamy, with a semi-dry finish and a medium-full body. Very good carbonation level.
O - Overall, this exceptional black beer is notably less sweet than a classic Schwarzbier. Plenty of rich roasted malt flavor. Be sure to let this warm up a bit if coming from standard refrigeration.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Cask draft at Khyber Pass. Opaque black pour, though shows up as a very dark clear ruby red under bright light. Large foamy beige head. Lace. Nutty dark brew. Burnt pecans. Black coffee. Toasted wheat. Little smoke. Very nice dark notes. Bit thin for a stout, but excellent as a Schwartzbier.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Aroma is sweet, malty, creamy, and bit of barnyard. Pours near opaque, dark, dark reddish brown. Ample tan head that recedes to a thin lace-cap.
Flavor is decidedly malty, with a moderate hop finish. Deep roasted notes like a stout. A nice fizz to the tongue with a long creamy finish. medium to full body. Overall, a substantial beer with more in common with a porter then a lager.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Pours pitch black in color with a small light brown head that fades quickly. Aromas are bacon, coffee, caramel, chocolate, smoke and nuts. Taste is solid, almost like liquid bacon. Light chocolate and caramel come through too. Finish has a nice burnt wood and smokiness to it. Mouthfeel is thin and a tad watery. Pretty solid schwarzbier.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a very dark brown/black color with a long lasting head of light brown foam. Scent is interesting with a mixture of malts with hints of cocoa and coffee. Taste is very robust with roasted and caramel malts, little bit of cocoa, and a little bit of a nutty aftertaste. Has a very nice texture and the taste lasts well after the swallow. Erupts the taste buds very nicely. Makes for a very good slowing drinking beer as it’s not something you should consider chugging down.
