3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Aroma is sweet, malty, creamy, and bit of barnyard. Pours near opaque, dark, dark reddish brown. Ample tan head that recedes to a thin lace-cap.
Flavor is decidedly malty, with a moderate hop finish. Deep roasted notes like a stout. A nice fizz to the tongue with a long creamy finish. medium to full body. Overall, a substantial beer with more in common with a porter then a lager.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Defining American Schwarz. Roasty, chocolatey, lightly bitter coffee. Easily drinkable. A strangely incredible beer to come from such a confusing brewery. Sprecher alternates between the great and the godawful like no other brewery I can think of save Short’s.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Appearance: Black body with a gorgeous creamy light tan head. It leaves some lacing on the glass.
Aroma: Earthy and but predominantly spicy noble hop scent. I pick up a hint of caramel in the background as well. The scent of this beer isn’t that strong, so I really have to get my nose close to it to draw out the aromas.
Taste: Light roasted flavor, a bit of charcoal but only a light bitterness at the back of the tongue. The bitterness does linger though. Some of the hops come through as a bit spicy and it does a good job of increasing the richness of the beer.
Palate: The beer has a fairly strong presence on the palate without being heavy. It’s like eating a piece of steak with a well-crusted exterior. It finishes medium-dry leaving just a touch of softness after a sip. It does have a bit more of a sweeter mouthfeel than I would want.
Overall: I think this is a good beer. It has a good balance of roasted flavor and hop spice to make it well worth drinking. It is a very clean beer, having only flavors that I would expect.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
2014 bottle. Pours a dark brown with a thick, creamy khaki/tan head. Aroma is lots of malt with caramel and coffee. Taste is all about the malt. Caramel, roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate and some green, grassy/floral hop flavor. Has a nice, light sweet taste that is balanced by the coffee bitterness. A light medium, slightly slick mouthfeel.
