1.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 3/20
Tap. Dark brown pour with tan head. Smells of butter and slight bourbon. I love barrel aged beers but all i got out of this one was butter. For me this was not good at all.

My mistake . . . the 1st bottle of this brew I drank cold & all I could taste was chocolate. The 2nd bottle was at 58 degrees & I could stomach it. But in comparison to Sprecherís Commando Scottish barrel aged ale, itís substantially inferior in fulfillment. I like my Russian Imperial Stout heavy weight, thick, one bomber suffices. Although Czar Brew is an improvement on the vast majority of íless than thickí stouts, even the non-barrel aged standard Straight To Ale Laika has an unrivaled thickness & uncompromising quality ingredients that barrel aged Czar Brew canít come close to replicating. Just use Laika as your reference & just about every barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout inevitably is a disappointment. However, Iíd give at 58 degree drinking temperature Czar Brew the edge over Big Eddy which I contacted Leinenkugels about a barrel aged version.

bought this in asheville if my memory isnít to far gone from all the glue i sniff .. . very black .. bourbon, tar, oil, and sweet burnt g.i joes .. . the mouth is a but of a let down, especially with the boozy feel .. . still good though .. . . A car with a car rack looked like a police car, so I slowed down, only to realize I had been tricked into obeying the law FOR NO REASON.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz bottle, pours nearly black, nice brown head, but fades quickly. Bourbon aroma, roast coffee, cocoa. Medium sweetness. This beer is not as thick and chewy as some of the others of this style, soft carbonation, and long finish.
Another solid RIS, give it a try.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Draft. Fairly slight aroma for the style, some vanilla, Tootsie Roll, bourbon and roast. Black in color, some brown showing around the edges with a very slight, fading head. Flavor is pretty bitter, with coffee ground, bourbon, cherry and oak, the bourbon being the dominant character here, the finish is fruity and somewhat hot with alcohol. Malt is here but is very thin and roasty, not much of a factor which for an Imperial Stout makes no sense. The main impressions are bourbon and bitter roast, though, not a lot of complexity. More wood on the finish. Very low carbonation, mouthfeel is thin and sticky with a big body. Didnít like this much.
