This tribute to St. Patrick’s Day is smooth and creamy, with the distinct flavors and aromas of bittersweet chocolate, coffee and dark roasted barley. Two precious batches of this robust, ebony colored stout are produced every year, one for St. Patty’s Day and one for Irish Fest. Best served at 50 degrees F.

Source: 16 oz bottle from local retailer. Aroma: Has a moderate roasty smell to it, sweet chocolate and caramel malts come through. Accidentally dipped my nose into the glass. Appearance: The beer is a very dark brown/black; not quite completely black, but close. A decently full and thick light brown head tops the pour. Taste: The head has got a little bit of staying power to it which is nice and malty on its own. The beer itself only lightly bitter, with solid flavors of roasted barley and coffee with slightly fainter chocolate and caramel notes. Palate: The beer has a moderately full body and, as I expect from the style, a nice smooth quality to it. Very easy to drink. Overall: A very respectable dry stout. It’ll be in my St. Patrick’s day rotation, methinks.

On tap at the brewery. Boring typical Irish style stout, lacking the creaminess of its more popular competitors, is more roasty and watery. Not recommended.

Bottle (labeled as Stout). Black color with thin tan head and no lacing. Smoke aroma. Malt with smoke, chocolate, and coffee notes. Watery body and thin mouthfeel. Long finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Appearance: Dark black body with a thin khaki head. Aroma: I get the slight scent of alcohol followed by an acrid roasted scent. A hint of burnt caramel follows. Taste: It doesn’t have an overpowering roasted flavor but it is fairly strong. The aftertaste of burnt caramel lingers on the palate. A bit of alcohol in there as well. Palate: It isn’t quite as dry feeling as I would expect from a Dry Stout. It’s a bit sticky and thick. O: Overall I was not very impressed by the beer. It was not dry as it should have been, and for a beer at 5.7% (from label) the alcohol just came through too much. The roast flavor is good, but it’s just not a very clean beer.

Decent but not much to it. Pours a warery black with light tan head. Not much arms, just slight chocolate and grain. Taste is watered down chocolate, hints of burnt coffee, and grain. Very light body and medium carbonation.

Jet black pour with rim of brown head. Smells like a chocolate bar. Sweet stout. Malty and coffee finish. Dry. Really good. Had this on draft at the sprecher brewpub in lake Geneva, IL.

Black. Small but lasting beige head, some drippy lace. Aroma is roasty, bittersweet, chocolate, bit of coffee. Flavor is much the same but the roasted malt backs down a little and gives way for more hop character. Flavor is Medium body. Finish is short, dry, light bitterness. Solid beer.
