BigBeer45 (470), Troy, Michigan, USA May 30, 2008 Updated: Jun 3, 2008 Bottle, label on my bottle is different then shown here, name on label is ‘Pub Brown Ale’, also, label reads 4.8% alcohol while Sprecher’s website states 4.5%, this bottle has a ruby to dark ruby pour and darker at the edges, has a good size fine creamy head that covers the ale and leaves some creamy lacing on the glass, is pretty effervescent, has a nice presentation in the glass, there are aromas of toasted malt, faint caramel with hints of chocolate and cola, some malt sweetness that has a touch of molasses on the nose, flavor of toasted malt, caramel and malt sweetness, malt sweetness is minimal in this brew, there is not much bitterness at the finish either but does finish with a good dryness on the palate, medium mouth feel, may be a touch thin, has a good amount of carbonation maybe a tad more then needed which made it a bit spritzy on the tongue, no sediment in the bottle, a little better then average brown.
Dezzilu (170), Versailles, France Aug 7, 2008 Truly a perfect looking pour, deep amber color with a lacey white head. Sweet hoppy aroma with toasted nut undertones. Unfortunately that is where the compliments end. The taste was quite watery with no real distinctive flavor and the finish was anything but memorable, leaving a stall taste in the mouth. This very much reminded me of British pub beers that have very little carbonation and are low in alcohol. On a hot day this might quench my thirst, but would never leave me satisfied. jbuzz (458), South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Aug 5, 2008 I didn’t much care for this in 1985 when Sprecher first started in Milwaukee.
I still do not much care for it. Watery, light malt. Gregis (904), Overland Park, Kansas, USA Jul 31, 2008 Bottle purchased at Corral Liquors in Granite City, IL. Pours a hazy orange-brown with a dense, frothy beige head that settles to a thin cap at the surface. The nose is fairly muted but is notably fruitier than most browns that I’ve tried: lightly toasted caramel malt backed by a mixed berry fruitiness that somehow makes me think of the Bartles & James wine coolers of the late 80s/early 90s (only not as cloyingly sweet). On the light side of medium-bodied the mouthfeel is quite soft with super-fine carbonation and a lightly astringent toasted finish. The flavor more-or-less follows the nose with the addition of a touch of hop bitterness at the finish. This is an interesting rendition of the style; it’s quite drinkable but ultimately forgettable. papajohn (990), San Diego, California, USA Jul 12, 2008 16 oz bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar: Orangish-amber color with a wisp of off-white foam. Aroma is light molassas and cola. Flavor is lightly nutty with a little caramel and ripe plum, a tangy bite and a moderately dry finish. Light body is watery with lively carbonation. esjaygee (721), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Jun 8, 2008 Light amber with next to no head. Aroma of caramel, sweet malts and light nuttiness. Taste is somewhat nutty with some sweet caramel malt to back it up. Body is a little watery and finish is a little dry. It’s an average beer from an average beer maker.
