Wonderfully complex roasted malt flavor though aroma is a bit thin. Bite is noticably absent with robust start and gentle finish. Pleasent aftertaste leaves the mouth feeling full.

UPDATED: MAR 7, 2007 Original Rating on 3/12/03, 7-3-7-3-16; Re-rate on 3/7/07. Pitch black color with a quickly collapsing head. Slightly sour and very malty aroma with a spice almost like spearmint. A moderate dry malt flavor with more burnt malt than I’d expect. It’s... hmm. It’s just, there. Not special, not bad.
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 JCW (1273) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAR 12, 2003
Very enjoyable Imperial Stout. Burnt aroma, along with malt and some alcohol. Full flavored, taste coffee and licorice. Very tasty brew. I'd like to get another before the winter is season ends.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 howie (549) - DeForest, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 30, 2002
UPDATED: NOV 28, 2005 Pours a beautiful deep rusty brown with lasting tan head. First impression on the nose is banana bread, then sweet chocolate, prune, and some roastyness. Don’t find much for hops in the aroma. Coffee comes out more in the flavor, along with licorice and bitter chocolate. Flavors are not as sweet as the nose suggests. As the beer warms, the carbonation dies down, the mouthfeel improves and the malt character comes out while retaining the licorice/cocoa bitterness of the roasted malt and hops. Under $6 for 4 16-oz bottles here in Wisconsin, it’s hard to complain.

I don’t know where to start on this one.Pours what looks like is going to be a porter.Aroma has the characteristics of a porter also.flavor is sort of lackluster but the PALATE is very suprising. Burnt caramel, slight espresso, lot of chocolate flavor. Finish is really hoppy but the palate kind of takes your mind off that.Tastes excellent the warmer it gets and I real didn’t start if cold.Gonna have to boost the flavor up one.Very affordable at 4.99 for a 4-pack of pints.More similar to Full Sail Imp.Porter than any stout I have ever had.Still,Lagunitas is a bigger miscall.

Actually has many of the same flavours as their dopplebock, a little more complex in the dark fruits and coffee grounds department and more viscous, but the same annoying elusively light quality to the flavour, as if they were trying to tone down all that splendour.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Jokes (1453) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - OCT 24, 2002
Re-rate: THis time around things were much nicer. The flavor was much more full, and the body seemed to be thicker. Still not my favorite Imperial, but much better than last time. 10/7/2002: This was a very disappointing Imperial Stout. Light and thin, this beer has almost no flavor. There are hints of roasty malts, chocolate, fruit, and perhaps a touch of hops. However, all of this is just a touch. Really, it was far to light and bland to really be an Imperial Stout, as far as I can tell.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 JFGrind (1715) - Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 4, 2002
Beer poured great, nice amber head with dark brown color. Aroma was a very satisfying carmel and coffee scent. Taste was the alcohol maltiness of an Imperial stout. Great beer! Here’s the bonus, Millville (NJ) Buy-Rite Liqours had it on sale for 3 bucks a four pack and 16 bucks a case. Beer was slightly out of date but still tasted fresh. I have to try more of the Sprecher (especially at these prices).

Delightfully robust with distinct roasted undertones. Rich and opaque, but the alcohol is not masked as well as some other stronger beers. Good usage of hops, but could maybe use a touch more malt or residual sweetness. A good beer for its price, however.

This is a really great stout, but it seems to come just shy of Imperial. Definitely worth trying.
