3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 schweinhund (16) - Racine, Wisconsin, USA - JAN 25, 2012
12 oz can from Pick N Save in Racine, Kenosha’s big sister! Very nice Vienna style lager from one of our first microbrewers. Pours a coppertone with light wig. Gentle, small bubble carbonation. Aroma, taste and palate are a sweetly hopped bouquet of the brewer’s art Think: the girl from Ipanema at your lips! Compared to Capital Amber I have to give this the nod. Randy Sprecher’s benchmark offering now available in 12-pack cans, adding convenience for many of us. Very nice, Mr. Sprecher! Prosit.

Bottle at Oakcrest. Special Amber is a copper colored lager with a decent amount of hops and a slight bitter-grassy aftertaste. Medium-to-light bodied, and not especially smooth.

(12oz bottle thanks to Cavie) clear amber pour with fine tan bubbles. Nose of sweet grain, toffee, a bit of trash, banana laffy taffy and peel, plus alcohol. Taste of old stale grain, banana, bit spicy, clove, and stale linger.
2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Sammy (5888) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - OCT 1, 2011
Fresh bottle from the brewery. A little cheesy aroma. Much head that resulted in a small retained head, on light yellow body. Not very drinkable, medium body. A Vienna, just not so tasty.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 SamGamgee (2451) - down the whirlpool, California, USA - SEP 25, 2011
Canned! Always interesting to see a new can on the market. Almost clear amber color with a medium head with poor retention. A little cilantro on the nose, as well as some canned corn, mint, and a general funky, herbaceous hop note. A little sweet cinnamon-spice cake as well. Lots going on in the aroma for a vienna. Bready and sweet with a medium body and a bitter, herbaceous finish and low acidity. Definitely some sweet melanoidin stuff going on, and hops also get in there and mix it up for balance. Almost a raw fruity, yeasty note to it as well. Flavorful and lingering in the finish with some bitterness. Not bad but a bit coarse, and I’m just not that into it.
