The story of the Seven Gates comes from rural Pennsylvania, not far from the Spring House Brewery. According to the legend, a mental asylum for the criminally insane stood in the middle of a dense forest. Surrounding the asylum were seven concentric gates, preventing would-be escapees. One terrifying night, the asylum caught fire, causing the inmates to flee into the menacing forest. As the tale goes, the former asylum residents were trapped by the seven gates, and eventually succumbed to the perils of the forest. The locals swear that the tormented souls of the inmates will torture anyone brave enough to attempt passage through the Seven Gates of the forest.

Spring House Brewing Co. honors the local legend by producing a terrifyingly delicious brew that is as familiar as a friendly forest, yet possesses a mysterious quality that will haunt you from the first taste. The enormous, hopped flavor and the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into each bottle will have you believing that the master brewer must be a direct descendant of the former asylum residents.

Note: Formerly contract brewed at Appalachian.

I really enjoyed this beer it is not an over the top IPA. Very balanced with a nice hoppiness that compliments the malt profile. Excellent color and carbonation. I tried this on tap at the brewery and also had it in bottles. Both were excellent.

I got the first can available to the public in a private tasting of the variety that is brewed exclusively at the Spring House Brewery itself instead of the Appalachian contract. This is a completely different beer, The aroma is crisp, citrusy, with piney notes. The appearance is golden with a light colored white head and clean looking. The taste is a lot less malty than the Appalachian variety...hops are in the fore-front, but not overbearingly bitter...refreshing with citrus notes and a floral after taste. Body is light thin texture lively carb and an abrupt finish. This is a return to the original Seven Gates...but in a can.

My kind of APA. +++Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a hazy bright amber color with a medium sized foamy orange-white head that left some lacing. The aroma was moderately strong sweet pineapple and grapefruit. The flavor was sweet and tangy caramel with sugar and moderate notes of pineapple, grapefruit and a hint of lemon. The finish was long with sugar, caramel and pineapple lingering. Fairly full bodied. Very drinkable.

Firkin version with citra and grapefruit zest at Barcade for their Spring House event. Pours clearish golden with small white head, good lace. Notes are insanely grapefruit with some bitter tangerine skin and candy booze. Finishes the same as echto cooler but not as accurate as turbo shandy was years back. Nice one off that seems like it’s much better then the regular version judging by the reviews.

Draft at the Irish Pol. Slightly hazy amber pour with a very frothy off-white head. Solid lace. Floral citrus hop flavors. A noticeable Band-Aid note in the nose. Tastes of juicy, watery, pink grapefruit pith, unripe oranges, green tomatoes, clementines and mango sap. Numbing pineapple cores. Watermelon rind. Lemon thyme. Spicy green peppers. Though light, this brew has much sharper hop notes than expected which makes it quite refreshing.

UPDATED: AUG 20, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Poured clear amber with poor head retention. Enjoyable citrus hop bite without an overwhelmingly bitter finish. This would make for a spectacular session beer. Solid effort for an aspiring brewer.

wow... bonus points for the creepy story. thanks to machfive55 for the bottle. pours a slightly hazed pale copper color with a small whitish head and spots of nonuniform lace. the aroma is heavy on fruity hops... orange/grapefruit/citrus mixes with caramel maltiness, earth, grass and brown sugar. the flavor follows the aroma... candied citrus, caramel, crystal malts? and a spicy hoppy finish. the body is not medium but it is not quite full. creamy texture from the carbonation. solid...

I bought this one in a 1/6 keg. Nice color, not overpowering, but with enough bite to please hopheads!
