A stunning porter; ominously dark but not heavy, smooth and easy-drinking, with the lingering finish of roasted barley.

Handpull cask at Silk Mill Ale & Cider House, Derby. Black with a slight purplish hue and a soft tan head. Smells overwhelmingly of blueberry but there a touch of liquorice too. Simply gorgeous. My fear is that it will be overly sweet but I needn’t have worried. The initial sweetness fades to a dogged bitterness shot through with sour berry and coffee grounds. Silky if slightly watery palate. Cracking little porter.

Cask at The Fountain, Leek. A deep brown to black colour with a medium beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, some chocolate, slight coffee, a little toffee and subtle liquorice. Taste of roasted malts, chocolate, some coffee, slight nuttiness and subtle liquorice. Light bodied and soft carbonation. A dry, roasted, chocolatey bitterness in the finish. Nothing exciting, but overall, a well rounded, decent porter.

Cask, gravity dispense at the Mulberry, Twickenham. Black, small bubbly brown head. Aroma is light treacle, some cardboard yeastiness, touch of oil. Body is medium, smooth, low carbonation. Taste is molasses, soft ash, dry finish with some paper. Not bad - not insipid, not oversweet ... so avoids the main complaints that can arise with the style.

Gravity dispense at the Mulberry Tree, Twickenham, 06/11/15. Light black with a decent tan covering of bubbles. Nose is light charr, dark fruit rinds, trace of coffee, brown bread, roast malt. Taste comprises charr, earthy roast, cocoa powder, toffee. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, drying close. Ok porter if a touch thin.

Cask at the Forest Hotel, Dorridge, Winter Beer Festival, 2015. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin whispy off white head. The aroma is light smoky malt. The flavour is light liqourice malt with a light dry coffee, hop bitter palate and a lingering liqourice bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Cask. Coffee malt aroma. Dark body, tan creamy top. It looks like glass of expresso with crema on top. Taste is smooth if a little thin. It certainly doesn’t coat the palate like a stout. So I might question the brewer’s "lingering finish." But good for all that

I can take it or leave it with Porters, but this one drops like a bomb! Surprisingly easy to drink with flavours that excite the palate.

Black beer with a thin beige head. Light coffee aroma. Flavour is light, chocolatey coffee. It has an unfortunate slightly watery feel but it’s rather tasty aside from that.
