3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 ianwelby (203) - SCOTLAND - FEB 28, 2013
A very pale golden ale, which is a fizzy and has a foamy head that dissipates quickly. A hoppy, fruity aroma and the flavour is similar, with a slightly sour edge and (as well as the hop and fruit) perhaps some spicyness in there too. It doesn’t taste strongly enough of anything to be particularly memorable but but it’s okay. A pity none of the flavours is picked out more distinctively.

Bottle, from Co-op Caistor. Pale gold, thin shortlived white head and gentle condition. Delicate citrusy nose with some sweet malt and a floral note reminiscent of elderflower, quite soft and lemony citric in the mouth with gentle sweet grain and a low oxidized hoppiness, almost shandy like at times. Finish is slightly dry and bitter with a hint of lemon and pepper lingering.

Poor appearance points - a dull gold colour with a head that didn’t last at all. Taste is much better though, light and refreshing, hop comes through quite dry in the finish with a little hint of herbs and mint. Nice enough beer.

Cask - The Duke of Wellington, Norwich. A clear, pale gold coloured beer with a small, ringing white head of foam. Subtle notes of sulphur on the nose with toasted malts, biscuit & some brown sugars. Similar flavour profile with OK touches of citrus and finishing with a grassy hoppiness. Light to medium body, soft palate texture & a medium length, softish finish.

Cask (handpump) at the Bell Inn, Nottingham on 13 July 2012. Note that the pump clip image on the brewery website shows “Maid Marian Blonde”, although I didn’t notice the “Blonde” on the pump clip here – may not have been looking too closely though. I presume it’s the same beer whatever the current correct name. Clear gold. Lasting white head. Dry, clean, biscuity. Bags of lemony citrus on the palate. Distinctly zesty. Very decent.

Cask. Clear golden beer with a steady white head. Aroma is fruity tangerine and mango. In the mouth, very tangy tangerine zests - giving a very bitter maltiness. Nice full mouth. Finish is mid-dry with lots of nice fruity bitters. Good beer.
