The Double Red is back on at Square One, and they’re now calling it third in the New World Strong Ale series even though it’s been here before. I tried the cask version. Pours a somewhat cloudy reddish-amber color with no head or carbonation. Notes of caramel malts, grassy and woodsy hops, rye, and brown sugar. The first half is really nice and then it starts to wash out a bit. Light-bodied, with a malty mouthfeel that becomes more watery and low carbonation. Not bad.

On draft at the brewpub. Sweet, fruity aroma, toasty and malty with notes of orange, dark caramel, toffee and faint pine. Thoroughly hazy deep red color, obviously unfiltered, with a fine, slight head. Flavor is sweet and fruity as well, with plenty of amber malts and fruity yeast, along with some mildly spicy, herbal hops, these helping to balance things out quite nicely -- no aspect is dominant, overall. Pleasant blend of red apple-like fruitiness and moderate hop bitterness late. Relatively low in effervescence with a medium body, palate is lightly oily and smooth. This was tasty.

Tasted 7/19/09. Pint draft from the brewpub. Filtered with a deep amber hue. Trace ring of off-white head. Malty and rich body with hints of toffee. Finishes dry with a nice rye bitterness. Good, sweet malt character. There is also a good dose of grassy fresh hops. The malt bill is sweet with notes of cinnamon bread. Medium bodied roast with a solid bitter finish. Tasty!

I had this on cask at the brewpub. It has a rich, malty nose with just the slightest floral hop. A very well-rounded beer and very drinkable.

I had this both on cask and on tap. On tap was better, so my rating is on that version. Pours a murky dark amber with a frothy off-white head. The aroma has toasted malt, woodsy earthy hops, some citrus and some malty sweetness to balance things out. Medium body with some subdued sharp carbonation - there is actually quite a bit of carbonation, but it is not obtrusive to the flavors. Flavor starts with lots of spicy woody hops and sweet earthy malts. Very hearty tasting. The finish focuses mainly on the hops with a bit of the sweetness lingering. This brewery has really seemed to have turned a corner with the last few beers I’ve had. Thumbs up to Square One for stepping up and having another winner.

Full red with copper highlights. Creamy mocha head stays throughout leaving nice lacing. Nose is caramel sweet malt, supported by some fresh bready notes, and a decent dose of hop. Nice. Quite full in the mouth with rich malt, and substantial residual sweetness. Hops are apparent towards the death, where some piney hop flavor and a spine of bitterness suddenly appear to save this from being cloying. Too sweet for me. On cask, and the low level of carbonation might actually have hurt this beer.
