3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at brewpub. Pours black with a khaki head. Leaves trace lacing. A bit sugary on the nose. I definitely get the maple on the tongue but also an undertone of a burnt note. Finishes fairly clean. I was hoping this would be a little better.

Dark black. Nice tan head. Make works extremely well with this. This would be amazing smoked. Well done stout.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: NOV 3, 2014 ORIGINAL RATING 3/18/2013: Had a half-pint on tap at the brew pub. It poured a clear, medium brown colour with weak off-white foam and some lace. Not at all stout-like, but nice true-to-style Nut Brown Ale aromas and flavors plus maple syrup, more in the aroma than flavour. Malty, fruity, caramelly, bready, with that delicious woodsy, resiny sweetness. Would make the perfect breakfast beer. Not terribly complex, but very tasty. Recommended.
UPDATE: tasted again at the St. Louis Brewer’s Guild Harvest Fest, temporarily renamed "Butterbeer" for their Halloween/Harry Potter/Hogwarts theme. Still more nut brown ale than stout, but tasty.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Tap @ Square One. Pours a dark brown appearance with a khaki head. Rich maple, toasted malt, and caramel in the nose. The mouth feel is a bit goopy but overall pretty tasty with the maple and caramel dominating.

Draft at Square One. Pours black with a dark tan head. Nose is huge maple syrup, kind of like fenugreek. Moderate sweetness to the nose, coffee and cocoa. On tasting, moderately sweet. Maple syrup is pretty robust overall, dominating the palate. Coffee and caramel, cocoa. Maple finish.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
October 30, 2012 on tap at brewery. Dark brown pour with tannish head and lacing. I was really excited about this one, but it ended up being like the regular stout with a bit of maple in the aroma and taste. A little too roasty for me where I would prefer more chocolate. Still good just not as good as I was hoping.

on tap at brewpub Dark reddish brown with not much of a head. Aroma of dark grains, milk and chocolate and metallic notes. Theres a sharp roast bitterness and creamy medium-full bodied mouthfeel the maple really stands out . Good, but a bit rough

On tap at brewpub
Revisiting Square One I was looking forward to what was on tap. The selection was not disappointing at all; the hard part was trying to decide which four beers to try. This was the first and a nice sweet stout that I could drink all afternoon.
Aroma / Appearance - A mocha head graced a flat black base. Within were maple syrup, ash, and coffee blended into a malt driven profile that perks up the senses. It doesn’t have a big punch but it doesn’t need one to be interesting.
Flavor / Palate - The fluid mouthfeel enriches the palate with maple char and coffee that reminds me of a country breakfast. Ash and smoke hang in the back of the throat. The only real complaint I have is a slight tang that pops up from time to time. Oherwise this is a finely balanced release as good (or better) than some of the other maple based beers I have tried.
