2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Not a big beer. Fairly tasteless except for the basic coke taste a lot of scotch ales have. Not much of a beer.

On tap - was brown in color with a very small head. Had some carmel in the aroma and something sweet? Had an earthy flavor with medium carbonation.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at Square One. Poured a crystal clear coppery amber with a short-lived off-white head. Aroma picked up a sweet bouquet of darker fruits with well-toasted caramel and toffee.. faint smoky accents work well to make this enjoyable. The flavor found plums and other dark fruits first with plenty of toasted caramel behind.. very malty throughout with mild bitterness.. faint smoky accents don’t play much of a role. Medium carbonation provides a creamy middle.. increasing bitterness toward the back.. nice feel overall, but too grainy as it slid off the palate.

draft @ square one. happy birthday kendra!
orangey brown color with a thin tan top. good aroma is mostly caramel malt sweetness and a little earthy fruit. texture is medium to full bodied. lots of taosty brown sugar through the middle. a little fruity banana is noted by my associate. nice coco flavor rounds out the finish.

Draught at the brewpub: Maybe my expectations were too high based on this style being one of my favorites and not a typical offering at a brewpub. Also, Square One seemed to be above the watermark with all the beers I had sampled before ordering a pint of this. The beer pours a pretty brownish-amber color with a foamy tan head that disappears from the center outward. Thin rings of lacing. The aroma contains malt, sherry and cough medicine. Medium-bodied and very malty with alcohol beneath the surface all along. Some smoked peat and fruit flavor as well. The flavor seems to be going in a lot of different directions and is simply not very cohesive. The finish is sweet and earthy malt and fruits. The beer is just average overall.

2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pour is a dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is sweet malts if you use your imagination. Flavor is again more malty but i did not get any smokyness or toffee. Just a heavy malted brew. Nothing really great.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draft pint at the brewpub. Dark amber, soda-like head. Tight little aroma, the flavor isn’t what I expected -- almost fruity, with an almost raspberry character. Very, very smooth and drinkable. Lightly caramelled in the finish, but this is a delicious medium-colored beer even for the summer. (#3022, 7/15/2007)

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
On tap at the brewpub. A deep clear copper with a light brown head. No discernable aroma. Sweet malts and bread made up a weak flavor profile. It was however well malted which provided a good body.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
From the tap, served in a pint glass. Poured a reddish amber with a foamy off-white head.
Aromas of caramel and toffee with a light smokiness, hints of earthy hops and a small whiff of fruity alcohol.
Good, light moderate carbonation and a malty crisp, dryish, smooth medium-light bodied mouthfeel.
There is some smokiness to the taste, but more smoky roasted malts without any peat flavors, nutty grains, caramel toffee, a subtle fruitiness from the yeast, a soft earthy bitterness, the alcohol is light with only a soft, mild warmth, making this dangerously quaffable, and a dry yeasty, malty finish.
I could have used some peat flavors, a little more fruitiness, more of a toasted grain quality, a little more body, but still, very enjoyable, because of the 10% ABV, I would call this more of a Wee Heavy than a Scotch Ale.

I was not a huge fan of this beer. Do not get me wrong, it has a great malt complexity. There is a bit of smoked malt and a lot of caramel/toffee to the beer. Too sweet for me personally. When I think scotch ale I do not really think butterscotch.
