COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Before there was Stout, there was Porter, the world’s first mass-produced beer. Our version is robust in character with a well balanced, toasted rich malt character and spicy hop bitterness. In the aroma and finish is just a hint of sweet smokiness.

Draught. Aroma is chocolatey malt with a faint smoky hint. Appears opaque dark brown with a thin tan head that leaves little lacing. Flavor is roasty, smoke is lightly evident lending a richness.

On tap at square one brewpub. Pitch brown with a medium tan head and wispy lacing. Aroma of smoked malts, wood, spice, leather and wood chips. Taste of salt, roasted malt, light smoke with a strange off-finish that’s mildly bitter.

Tasted 11/15/10. Half Pint from the Brewpub. Dark brown hue with a moldy tan head. Aromas of smokey malts, subtle anise and mild soy sauce. Nicely full bodied with a big smoke aspect. Decently blended, but definitely more heavy on the smokiness. While cold and straight from the tap, it was a little overt, but it really melds with time and temperature. Very solid for the style!

Consumed on 11-14-2009. Arrived a black color with a very dense, tan head. Aroma has a strong roasted black malt note, mild dark fruit, some chocolate with a low smokiness. Flavor has a strong smoky, wood smoke note which fades to a light chocolate with a dark fruity note. Modest body, low carbonation and a nice creamy texture. Overall a decent brew with a strong smoke flavor but works pretty well.

This is one of the better Square One beers I’ve had. Very nicely smoked, great malty, smokey aroma and a well-balanced beer.
