Had a bit (on tap at the C’est What at the end of Fri night’s summer party festivities, but I was wiped). So now I’m at home having DougShoemaker’s gift bottle. Far and away the best Oatmeal stout I’ve ever had...perfectly balanced. I like roastiness, and this has got it. But it is also amazingly smooth, and has the most wonderful slight raisin (and other fruit?) sweetness. Ahhhh. Aroma and flavor perfectly matched...a real world classic.

Hmm - I taste three threads here, running about at different strengths through the experience. One is thick, sweet, and chewy, the second black, bitter, and gainy, and the third a weird tart, sherry like note. Pretty complex, but doesn’t all seem to pull together for me.

UPDATED: MAY 10, 2004 Very thick pour with a milk chocolatey head that seems to last for days - one of the darkest beers I've had to date. Toasted hazelnut/toffee scented aroma with an awesome mouthfeel. Perfect carbonation for a stout (most tend to under-do it). This is definitely the best beer I've had in my tasting career to date. Special thanks to mr_kimchee for making the trade so I could experience this brew and make it my 100th rating!
Re-rating on 5/10/04: I'm about as convinced as I'm going to be that this is the absolute finest beer I've sampled to date, and it gets the perfect score from me.

Poured tar black with a big muddy head.Big chocolate notes in the nose along with a hint of espresso in the back.Big lush velvety body. Very full and satisfying for such a low abv brew. Flavor is enticing with roasted malts, cocoa, coffee all combining then seperating to let one come to the front. Excelent brew. Thanks to hopsrus for this one.

Tall head and well carbonated. For a semilow alcohol beer, this one has a lot of complex flavors and aromas. Pours thick. Flavors include molasses, ginger, nutty, black licorice, and of course roast. A tiny sherry note and buttery, diacetyl flavors as well. Rich mouthfeel and lingering aftertaste.

UPDATED: APR 23, 2009 My top beer for 2002. Pours like dirty oil. I like that in a stout. Found the flavour comparatively dry and almost smokey or burnt/espresso. Very smooth and enjoyable. Black, of course, and thick dark head. Never get tired or this. Like drinking candy from a bottle.
4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 YogiBeera (2435) - Hamburg, GERMANY - DEC 4, 2002
Thank you so much Richard. Chocolate, caramel, vanilla, baking powder aroma. Smells so great. Black as the night, little hazelnut brown layer. Brussels lace. Bitter coffee taste, chocolate with 90 % cocao beans taste. Kicks on the roof of the tongue. Suprisingly thin, not syrupy. Long lasting bitter finish. "This beer rocks" as user-ex would probably say.
4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 pivo (2540) - GERMANY - DEC 4, 2002
Whoa, is this a powerful beer. Starts with an intense aroma of chocolate, coffee and brandy. A top an opaque brown body is a brown head of tight small bubbles. Extremely bitter taste with a tight dry finish that ends like a strong espresso in the sides of the mouth. Not as thick as expected, but overall a great beer. I used to get this stuff readily and liked to make my famous stout pancakes from it.

UPDATED: MAY 16, 2003 (Draught) An excellent stout! I am fortunate enough to have a local pub that carries this fine beer on draught. An nice, thick dark brown head hides the molasses-rich coloured beverage that is about to be enjoyed. Flavours of cocoa with a slight follow-through tartness. Far better on draught - too smokey in the bottle.
