ketchepillar (475), Viña del Mar, Chile Mar 25, 2008 Nose is decent, but a kinda vinous. Some chocolate. Flavor is buttery, chocolaty, and not that great. Finish is much better- rich chocolate & coffee but has some nice bitterness. fredandboboflo (1395), East Setauket, New York, USA Mar 25, 2008 Bottle. Aroma of the corner coffee shop. I’m not a huge coffee drinker, in fact I probably drink coffee about four times a year, but this aroma just feels like a lovely, refreshing foray into a local, homely coffee establishment, and I love it. Sure there’s probably some more specific flavors in there, but in this case it’s definitely about the forest, not the trees. Flavor largely continues in this vain but also with some nice bitter chocolate/chocolate with bittering hops. Appearance almost garnered the rare 5, but the head wasn’t quite as refined as I require for a 5, dissipated a bit too fast...it’s pretty, I’d give it a 4.5, I’m just rambling to logically justify to myself my intense internal pull away from the 5. Mouthfeel solid, nothing special, nothing wanting. Great brew. cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 25, 2008 Pitch black, rapidly fading creamy choco mousse head. Smells like it has more alky than 5%. A little alarming on the olfactory and it makes me brace for that kind of flavor impact. However, the initial flavors are more laid back. Mild black coffee and perhaps some bitter choco flavors. Well behaved on the palate. No hint of impy stout rudeness. Slightly roasty bitter yet enjoyable. Fun to drink and experience. Mildly bitter back of throat flavors do not linger much. Ported (67), Ontario, Canada Mar 24, 2008 Bottle. Pitch Black, with a light brown head. Smells and tastes of roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. Nice slightly syrupy texture, with light carbonation and relatively low abv make this an easy drinker. Delicious, will drink again. JaPe (69), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 21, 2008 Man, The color is amazing even when it pours or slides down the glass its this consistent sexy darkness. The flavor is yummy oak and sweet and bitter chocolate , malts each taking tuns at you mouth. I never cared much for stouts because of the bitter bite I associate with them, but this gives you the RICH rich sweetness that makes the bitter welcome. ToadMan (554), Washington, Washington DC, USA Mar 20, 2008 Rich dark color with big thick chocolaty head. Big roasted malt/mocha aroma. Lots of roasted, almost smokey malt strong tones of roasted coffee, finishes lightly bitter. Rather thin and too much roasted coffee for my tastes. Good, but doesnt accentuate the flavors I look for in a stout. gunhaver (1024), Tampa, Florida, USA Mar 18, 2008 Updated: Jun 4, 2008Bottle courtesy blankboy. Pours a dark brown with reddish highlights. Fluffy, soapy tan head that slowly melts away. Cotton-candy like lacing. Aroma is real doughy. Some coffee, brown sugar. Slight, distant molasses. Has a thin malty body. Fresh dough flavors, roasted wet malts, chalky aftertaste. Meh. Very thin-bodied, watery finish. Disappointed. yesyouam (587), Fairport, New York, USA Mar 17, 2008 St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout is a brownish black ale with a thick, dense, light brown head that leaves great lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet with oats, grain and chocolate. It is medium-full bodied, pretty smooth, slick from the oats and the finish is crisp. The flavor is resiny, wooden and smoky. I didn’t detect the smoke element in the aroma, but it’s sure there in the taste. There is a slight chocolate presence and it’s well blended. It’s a good example of an oatmeal stout.
