St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout

Bottle via miketd. Dark color. Smell of malt, coffee, bread and minor chocolate. Taste of chocolate, roasted coffee, malt, dough and some hop bitterness at the end. Was expecting a lot from this one. Definitely not a 4 average!

11.5 oz bottle. New to Consumers, I went out on a limb and got a 4-pack (along with an Old Rasputin 4pk, oh happy stoutie days). Nice black coloring, brown head, good lacing. Flavor as stated is typical chocolate coffee, very smooth and flavorful. Would have expected a higher ABV though and that cost it a couple points. As it warmed it gained a very smooth roasted flavor I quite enjoy.

Pour is deep black with a nice beige head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and roasty. Good lacing. Flavor is subdued and has a dry coffeeish thing going on. Strange aftertaste. Very dry and carbonated. Meh...

Bottle. Pours a deep oily brown with a nice tan head that doesn’t last very long, but laces well throughout. Aroma of coffee and dark chocolate. Deep roasty flavor, espresso, and bitter dark chocolate. It could use a little more compexity of flavor. It is sort of a one trick pony with the roasted bitterness. This has a big initial mouthfeel for 5%, but it is somewhat thin bodied for a stout and this became more noticable the more I drank. However, it is very flavorful and drinkable despite the roasted bitterness and dryness. It would be very easy to under rate this beer if comparing it to Oatmeal Stouts such as Southern Tier Oat or Founder’s Breakfast Stout, but keeping all things equal and not comparing Imperial level stouts to this, it is a solid brew. Enjoyable, but could use a little flavor balance to round things out.

disappointed and surprised at the very high rating here. a nice appearance and chocolately/cherry smooth aroma give way to an initial oatmeal/chocolate zing of flavor leading to an underwhelming astringent stale coffee flatness with severe metallic overtones, and some buttery DMS notes. Not very good.

Bottle. Pours jet black with a nice tan head, receding slowly. Good lacing. Nose of coffee, with hints of banana esters and diacetyl. Moderately thin body, coffee/chocolate, not very sweet, some buttery/banana notes, harsh astringent finish ruins the experience. Disappointing to say the least.

A nice stout. Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Not incredibly strong, but decent. Pour was was a dark black with a nice 3 finger tan head that stayed the whole drink. Taste was great. Strong coffee taste with hints of vanilla and chocolate in the middle. Semi dry bitter aftertaste. Didn’t care much for their other beers, but this was very good.

Chocolate and vanilla on the nose. Pours dark brown, black with a thin tan head. Very smooth flavor, creamy, chocolate, with hints of coffee. My favorite of the 3 we sampled from this brewery.
