ryan (1774), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Jun 17, 2006 Bottle from Hopscotch, thanks Eric. Aroma is fairly light, some oats, cream, roast. Lasting cover, some lacing. The flavor is chocolate, lactose, oatmeal and some molases. Full bodied with a creamy, slightly oily texture. Very good session stout. bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jun 14, 2006 "yum This one poured a jet black not edges of any kind, nice tan head which laced well. Aroma was of coffee and sweet chocolate. FLace was good, after it warmed was great. roasted malts and coffee and chocolate. Thick mouthfeel. This one is good." apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA Jun 11, 2006 The looks of this one are a dark brown body, small tannish, frothy head around the sides of the glass. Great amounts of malts, lactose sweetness and chocolate in the aroma. The flavor is nearly the same: full-bodied, full of cocoa and coffee and hearty roasted malts. Not as sweet as I expected it to be. Wet finish, but very smooth. Nearly a perfect stout. Heavy, but not syrupy. Perfectly blended flavors. eaglefan538 (2351), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jun 11, 2006 Poured a dark black color with no red or brown edges. The head was appreciable, nice chocolate tan color with excellent lacing. The aroma was of dry dark cocoa and very light coffee. Flavor was a nice combination of roasted malts, dark cocoa and coffee with a dry roasted oatmeal finish. A bit acidic / lactic in the finish, somewhat bitter for a sweet stout (exactly what an oatmeal stout tends to be, though). Light hops in the finish to keep this "sweet" stout from running away with any sweet / malt absurdness (ie. definite bitter statement in the end). Light smoke aftertaste. Mouthfeel is thick but not syrup-like, somewhat dry. A nice beer, but probably not in my overall top 25 list. One sampling (May ’06) of this left me with a touch of bubblegum and currants in the flavor beneath everything else above. Not sure if the bottle was getting too old or what, but that was only one out of my five or more experiences with this brew. henrikb (1298), Aarhus, Denmark Jun 6, 2006 Black body, huge brown head lasting very long, beautiful lacing; Incredibly pleasant nose to the sweet side, it could be deeper, lots of soft milk chocolate, Latin American coffee, cinnamon, some oatmeal behind that gives it a little dry character; Quite dry body, some bitterness and a little salty, thin texture, very little sweetness; Into a bit watery, very long, dry, bitter, quite 1-dimensional finish, with a lot of coffee and a very little oatmeal, but that is about it for aroma. The fill of body and nose doesn’t fit to well together. Thanks a lot to Radiomgb for bringing this one over (together with a lot of other Canadian wonders). Canuckistani (41), Dundas, Ontario, Canada Jun 5, 2006 Updated: Jun 18, 2006Too bitter for my taste, but it’s got a great overall palate. Aftertaste isn’t so great; it reminds me more of soy sauce than coffee, but I’m picky about my coffee, so maybe i get lost there. However, I could definitely pick up the chocolate aftertaste. The palate is excellent, but only at a reasonably warm temperature. I put it in the fridge for only about 20 min from room temperature, and the flavour is thus greatly improved over the same beer cold. I find it strongly reminiscent of Leffe Brune. Very much. jacktripper (20), Canada Jun 4, 2006 Pours a very dark (almost pitch-black) with a creamy brown head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate and a light hint of alcohol. Tastes much the same although the finish smacks of dark roast coffee and the darkest, most bitter chocolate. One of a kind, simply the best stout I have ever had. frankenkitty (1900), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Jun 2, 2006 A viscous pour produced a black-bodied brew with a reverse-cascade forming a creamy, dark tan head that lasted and laced. Burnt coffee roasted aroma with milk chocolate gets me salivating. Additional wort and buried alcohol. Heavy and oily mouthfeel with a well-roasted, bitter flavor. Finish feel is dry with a finish flavor that is both sour and buttery... yet the lingering impression reverts to bitter coffee and dark chocolate. Awesome... I needed a good beer!
