Cole (264), , Alberta, Canada Jun 22, 2009 Pours black, thick beige head. Aroma is very malty. Oats, coffee, slightly chocolate aroma. Flavour is smooth, slightly sour, a little burnt, very dry and a strong coffee finish. Very strong and hot for 5%. HonkeyBra (1258), Lemont, Illinois, USA Jun 21, 2009 Very dark opaque pour. Rich, chocolatey aroma with some oatmeal. Flavor is oats, dark chocolate, a bit of smoke, charcoal, and a light sourness. Some licorice too. Mouthfeel is full with good carbonation. Rich, chocolatey finish. Savvy1982 (303), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Jun 19, 2009 Bottle. Pours a nice rich dark brown, with a very thick, fluffy, and lacy tan head. Aroma is thick with oats, very sweet. Milk chocolate, roasted barley, did I mention oats? Palate of coffee, a touch of cigarette ash, rich and mild. Very good. dnstone (134), , New Jersey, USA Jun 18, 2009 Pours nice and dark, with a dark head; nice retention and lace. Starts light, followed by the oatmeal, and finishes with toasty/burnt flavor; overall very smooth & enjoyably unobstrusive. HOPSHUNTER (376), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 15, 2009 Bottle courtesy of zathrus13. A black beer with a thick, dense brown head this beer looks fantastic in the glass. Amazing roasted nose with lots of rich chocolate and coffee notes. Body is extremely thin and disappointing. Flavor is dry with a big roasted character with chocolate under tones and a slightly smokey presence. Finishes smooth and roasted. Davros (200), Australia Jun 10, 2009 Almost jet black in colour, with a thick brown head that leaves lovely lacing.
Glorious aroma of sweet roasted malt, chocolate, hazelnuts, light coffee and subtle hops (noble?).
Flavours are mostly roasted malt and rolled oats, with some chocolate in the background. Solid roasted bitterness.
Full body with creamy carbonation. Very smooth! nate2g (1034), Brisbane, Australia May 30, 2009 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium beige head. Aroma and flavour of coffee, chocolate, brown sugar and smoke. Smooth mouthfeel with a good lingering bitterness. Delicious stout. smcolw (313), Wayland, Massachusetts, USA May 24, 2009 Near mahogany color where no light can pass through. Beige head of two fingers to start. Slow settling into a rocky formation--spotty lace on the side of the glass.
Smells like chocolate pudding and ice cream. There’s some mocha in the background. I like that this is not an in-your-face aroma that many stouts have.
A lot more coffee in the taste--nearly no chocolate. Burnt toast, very dry! The finish features the introduction of some hop bitterness, but the black patent malt really comes through long after the swallow. This is a full beer with a slightly higher than expected level of carbonation.
If very dry, coffee-ish beers are your preference than this will be a clear winner.
