Commercial Description:
St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout consistently beats out international stouts in blind tastings and competitions. This intensely black ale carries strong hints of espresso and chocolate. The oatmeal contributes body and ensures a long-lasting mocha-coloured head. If you like stout, you will love St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout.

33 cl bottle. Tasted at home. Dark allmost black colour with a nice little head. Aroma of sweet chocolate and sweet caramel. Nice tasty flavour of coffee, chocolate and someway a touch of sourness. Ends up quite dry and little bitter.

Bottle: Opaque pour with creamy brown head. Lots of roast in the nose with some grainy earthy bark and dark chocolate. Rich velvety/creamy body with a better flavor than aroma. Richly roasted flavor with some mocha & coffee flavors, accompanied by bitter dark chocolate. There’s also a smoky touch and a tobacco hint in the later palate. Rich malt presence and easy drinking.

This is all that it’s cracked up to be. Glorioius head and nice cascading when poured in a tall glass. Super persistant head that actually forms an eternal peak when you poke your finger in it. Creosotic, pruney roasted ale aroma with a little hazelnut and chemical. Superbly balanced. Tasty and smooth. Not too sweet, bitter or otherwise. Nutty graininess and mild cocoa on top of the porter flavoring. Well done, well done.

Bottle smuggled illegally across the border. Super-smooth and creamy in the mouth, much like if it were on nitro. Great roastiness and a very slighty funky sourness plus a creamy, oaty nose make this an outstanding stout. Totally restrained yet still lush, very dry, and pretty much the antithesis of the typical top 50 stouts you see.

Re-Rate 06/06/02: Deep brown to black in color, large frothy chocolate head, great sheets of lace. Nose is toasted grains, coffee, chocolate, earhty and quite pleasant. Sweet at the front, full at the top, the finish is lightly carbonated, dry, nicely hopped and quite a good ’Stout’.

Vintage 2003.
Pitch black with a thick brown head. Roasted aroma with chocolate and coffee notes. Sweet, full and nice. Coffee and roasted flavor with dusty hints. Good taste, but surprisingly thin bodied. Little dissapointing.

[118-20061126] 341mL. Hints of chocolate and nutty coffee in the aroma. Dark dark brown-black body with a long-lasting brown-red foamy head. Flavour is very rich bitter coffee, still the dark chocolate hazelnutty present with a little medicine. Full heavy and thick body with a bitter tongue feel. Nicely comes together.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown, near black body with a frothy, light tan head. Smell: Roasty, oat-encrusted aroma with notes of unsweetened chocolate and coffee, along with a small whiff of black licorice. Taste: Pleasing mixture of cold, black coffee, creamy steel cut oats, and chocolate. Medium-low amount of sweetness. Lesser tastes of licorice and vanilla. Faint fruitiness. Earthy, roasty bitterness. Further taste of roasted barley and a light pinch of good, clean soot on the dry finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Decidedly creamy mouthfeel. Drinkability: Recommended. As an oatmeal stout charged with plenty of flavor and yet still manages to maintain a reasonable ABV%, I’d say it’s got a damned high degree of drinkability.
