shalloWMeans (151), Florence, Kentucky, USA Sep 1, 2008 Updated: Oct 9, 2008 Beautiful. Intense. Intimidating. This lovely quebecois stout pours an inky black; dark as night, and is topped by an enormous, delicious looking, oatmeal colored frothy brown head. The aromas here are intertwined and complex- rich, dark cacao nibs with lightly roasted French coffee, oatmeal cookies, cream, delicate dark berries, and tiramisu. Creamy, luscious, oily, and velvety smooth on the palate, this beer first hits the tongue with notes of french roast java and dark, heavily toasted/burnt caramelly malt. Further sips bring hints of luscious single-origin dark chocolate- bittersweet and complex, balanced by the fruity and tangy dryness of the hops. This stout is medium-bodied, not overpoweringly rich or alcoholic, and has a delicate drinkability that makes this an ideal beer for chocolate pairings or even session drinking and conversations with friends. It is warming yet bitter, crisp and fruity. The tastes are so seemlessly blended and, though the burnt, dark chocolate basically defines the beer, the stringent, bittering, and appetizingly drying hops make a very important contribution in the finish and keep this stout balanced, lively and complex, with a soft and harmonious character that keeps giving. A very well-crafted beer.
fredthecat (52), Canada Jan 7, 2009 smells like a coffee cream candy from pot o gold chocolates. it poured with a thin but lasting dark head and is dark dark brown. it feels as smooth as velvet.. absolutely awesome feel. the taste is subdued, bitter coffee. golubj (1133), Redwood City, California, USA Jan 2, 2009 Bottle, thanks to someone. Black pour with brown ring of head. Aroma is sweet milk, light roasted malt. Flavor is the same, with chocolate as well and caramel sweetness. alexanderj (1518), San Diego, California, USA Jan 2, 2009 Bottle courtesy of golubj. Very nice looking pour with a dark brown color and a light brown head. Aroma was quite sweet with a lot of chocolate, vanilla, caramel with a very light roasted presence. Flavor was much more balanced than the aroma, but there was still alot of sweetness, that did not seem to work too well. More smokey and roasted elements than the aroma foreshadowed. Maybe I was not in the mood for it, but this did not quite connect with me. DrDavid (669), Johnson, Vermont, USA Dec 30, 2008 Bottle. Very powerful chocolate and roast aroma. Black body, light brown head. Flavor follows from aroma, roasted and chocolate, then adds a lengthy bittersweet finish. Delicious. plovmand (827), Helsinge, Denmark Dec 28, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown body wit a medium tan head. Roasted malt, tobacco and chocolate in aroma. Flavour is the same with some caramel and smoke to add. Soft and pleasant body.
