COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout is Quebec’s tribute to the late 1700’s English Imperial Stouts, brewed for the Russian courts of Catherine the Great.
Made from a blend of barley malts, St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout is infused with Cascade, Goldings and Willamette hops, resulting in an outstanding hop-character with a smooth finish. Bourbon wood-aged, this full-bodied ale has a rich, smoky aroma with hints of vanilla, expresso and chocolate.

Serve St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout between 13°C and 15°C, preferably in a port glass or a brandy snifter. This stout will improve with age for a number of years. Store in a cool, dark place.

Pours dark and velvety with thin but fine bubbled head. Aroma has nuts, vanilla, chocolate, wood. Taste moves from malty sweetness, to chocolate, to coffee, to vanilla, smoky woodiness. There’s a red fruit theme throughout as well. The bourbon really shows itself at the end with especially when the alcohol heat kicks in, but it doesn’t taste like 9.2%. Starting to get bitter about halfway through and gets increasingly bitter till the end, leaving a strong lasting vaguely citrus bitterness. This is the only time I really perceive any hops. It’s great, but would definitely benefit from a rounding off of bitterness that a year or more in the bottle should provide.

Black color with inch thick beige head. Aroma is vanilla, dark chocolate, coffee, fantastic. Taste is similar, but not thick enough for this beer. Bitter finish. Still good stuff.

11.2 ounce bottle purchased in Vancouver. Aroma is a bit ashy, some anise and licorice. Not much else. Inky dark brown/black body with a small virtually non-existent tan head. Starts with lots of oaked woodiness. Super woody. Has some anise and ashiness in the middle. Finishes with a bit of astringency. Kind of harsh.

341 cl bottle. Thanks Timo A!
Pours pitch black color with a small beige head. Aroma has distinct bourbon in it, dark chocolate, even some dark ripe fruits, cocoa and caramel. Flavor is chocolaty, bourbon is present, vanilla sweetness, maybe some coffee too. Quite bitter palate, still very smooth. Excellent.

Flavour of rich sweet roastiness, harsh licorice notes, dark chocolate, espresso, smoked meat and even peat notes. Strong wooden notes. Full bodied. Very thick mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Wow, so good balance.
