4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle courtesy of Dany. Pours black with a large tan head. The aroma has dark roasted malts, molasses, dark fruits, wood and light bourbon. The flavor had dark roasted malts, dark fruits, chocolate, light bourbon, vanilla, wood and a hint of smoke. There was some bitterness to the back which switched things up a bit. Pretty smooth, this was enjoyable.

Opaque dark brown in colour. Small light brown mousse head.
In the beginning Bourbon is pronounced then the hoppy character can be tasted. And when you start to think that this highly rated Russian Stout will leave you with a bitter mouthfeel, then the coffee and chocolate will blow your mind with a smooth finish. I’m not a big fan of stouts but this Russian Imperial Stout has changed my perspective about stouts. Best stout I’ve had so far.

Du bonbon! Je ne sais pas si le vieillissement en fût lui est si bénéfique mais maudit que c’est bon!!! L’odeur est si complexe...

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20

2013/12/03 - Pours opaque black with a small, creamy, brown head that dissipates quickly, but leaves a ton of sticky lacing. Aroma is roasted malts, cocoa, vanilla and bourbon. Taste...where do I begin with the flavours?! Bitter cocoa, roasted coffee, vanilla, bourbon and smoked wood. Mouthfeel is thick and oily with smooth carbonation and a bitter, slightly drying finish. Just the right amount of sweet and bitter. Fantastic job with the bourbon and smoked wood flavours. A top notch RIS.

Pours darker than (insert tired cliche here) with a beautiful deep brown one finger cap. Taste is complex. Not only are you getting an imperial stout with St Ambroise finger prints all over it, but the bourbon barrel aging adds a depth & distinction that makes it a unique brew. As someone who loves their Kentucky bourbon as much as their beer, I’d love to know who their barrel supplier is (ie whose bourbon it is that I’m tasting). All in all this is another high level brew from these guys.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
(2011 bottle, ~2 years old) Pours pitch black with a small quite dark brown active head that faded quickly away but left lots of lace. A big, rich aroma: dark bittersweet chocolate, roast coffee/malt, smoky/burnt wood, vanilla, a little bourbon, soy sauce, something creamy/coconut-like, definite malt sweetness underneath all those layers. Flavour initially black coffee, roasted barley, chocolate, vanilla sweet malt. Then the bourbon and wood components build up though the whiskey is never overpowering. Smoky and burnt from the mid-palate on, a bit of anise/hop character. Quite dry for most of the latter half of a sip, with a fairly substantial roast barley/hop//smoke bitterness to the finish. Palate is full but smooth with the alcohol pretty well-hidden, carb not heavy but slightly prickly. This is a really good RIS - it’s got lots of layers of aroma and flavour to discover, the wood-ageing is kept well in check and it’s neither a sugar or roast bomb and the dry/bitter nature is compelling. Wish I had more 2011 left than I do, and I should go get another 2013!

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
341ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a large tan head, which lasts very well and leaves good lacing. Bittersweet dark chocolate, aniseed, hazelnut and latte make up the aroma. Mild herbal hops and strong liquorice up front segue into bitter cocoa and smooth latte in the mid-palate. Roasty malt, burnt caramel and hazelnut come in at the finish, with persistent cocoa bitterness lasting right through to the aftertaste. This is a very impressive imperial stout. It is strong, complex and highly enjoyable: all the things an imperial stout should be.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
Poured thick, creamy mocha head, black as night. Bitter, smokey, big, and bold. Aftertaste is strong and lingers. I wanted to enjoy it more than I did. Again I’ve got one more bottle. Tried it alongside an 18 Ola Dubh. Or Russian Imperials just aren’t my thing.
