COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Also known as St.Ambroise Millésimée.

In honour of our tenth anniversary, McAuslan Vintage Ale has been brewed to continue the centuries-old tradition of strong ales and barley wines. Vintage Ale is rich and malty, with a surprisingly well balanced and clean hop finish provided by classic Goldings hops. The ale is unfiltered and derives its orange hue from wheat malt blended with pale and Munich malts. The malts also provide a hints of caramelized fruit reminiscent of a Christmas pudding.
McAuslan Brewing will celebrate each new year by brewing Vintage Ale on our anniversary. As a vintage product, we estimate this ale will remain in good condition for a number of years.
The 2006 edition is down from 9.4% to 9.2%. In 2007 this went to 8%. In 2009 this went to 9.8%, and in 2011 it went to 10%.

All vintages of this barley wine (1999, 2000, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011) are to be rated on this page.

Hazy reddish-amber w/thich head; chewy, rich aroma with tons of malt, mint, leafy hops, peaches, alcohol. Flavour is rich, peachy, malty, perhaps a little bit more balance in the finish that last year’s (dryness contributed equally by woody-tasting hops and alcohol)

THANKS to tom10101! 341 ml. bottle shared with Kraddel during the (Ice) Cider/Perry tasting @ Barely Legal Tasting Room. 2011 Vintage. Dark amber, very little head. Oxidized nose, herbal, biscuit, brown sugar sweet. Taste is odd herbal, tad plant-like mixed with sweet biscuit, brown sugar, oxidation, caramel, herbal bitter finish; Body shows some signs of age. I would have probably enjoyed it more had I not sampled 6 ice ciders + 1 ice perry prior to this one.

Pours a lovely dark amber colour with a thinner tan head has notes in the nose of caramel, some dried leaves and no discernable hops. Flavours of, caramel, nuts, herbs, toast, leather, alcohol, licorice, raisin and vanilla. Very tasty and lovely in it complexity. Mouth feel is a big bold thickness with a lower level of carbonation. Finishes with big vanilla notes and a slight alcohol warming. A perfect "by the fire on a cool fall evening" beer

Merci St-Ambroise.

2009 bottle courtesy of chuckaduck, thanks again! Dark copper/amber pour. Aroma is sweet toffee and dark fruits. Flavor is a wonderful combination of vanilla, caramel, and candied fruits. Abv is completely hidden as well. Just delicious.

Pours a slightly hazy deep amber with a fat finger of fluffy beige head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, moderate lacing. Nose is toffee and caramel, candi sugar, dark fruit and spice, with a boozy edge. Taste starts burned sugar sweet and gives way to building bitter as the sweet fades. Heavy body, slick buttery texture, low carbonation, and a sticky bitter boozy finish. Lots going on here - burned sugar, dark fruit, big booze... This isn’t a beer that does subtle. That’s not entirely a good thing, mind you, since that does apply to the bitter finish, which comes on strong and lingers, with some harshness. Could perhaps use some cellaring time to smooth the rough edges.

Pours a lovely dark honey color. Aromas are honey, dried fruit and grapes. Vinous flavors. Sweet dried fruit. Very smooth. A lot of great stuff going on here.

"Deep red and caramel colored. Boozy aroma of dried fruits, caramel, brown sugar, quite malty. You can tell the abv is high but it’s an excellent sipper. Very sherry like in aroma and flavor as well. Smooth. Not a lot of hop presence (slight bitterijg in the afteraste) but its not needed. Expensive, but I’d get again as a special treat."

Thanks Tommy. 2011 bottle. Orange-toned brown body with creamy off-white head and nice lacing. A bit of a citrus and dried fruit aroma, caramel. Loads of flavour of grapes, dried fruit, roasted malts, cocoa, a touch of coffee, prunes, bubblegum. Tastes awesome. Overall a fantastic barley wine.
