COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Also known as St.Ambroise Millésimée.

In honour of our tenth anniversary, McAuslan Vintage Ale has been brewed to continue the centuries-old tradition of strong ales and barley wines. Vintage Ale is rich and malty, with a surprisingly well balanced and clean hop finish provided by classic Goldings hops. The ale is unfiltered and derives its orange hue from wheat malt blended with pale and Munich malts. The malts also provide a hints of caramelized fruit reminiscent of a Christmas pudding.
McAuslan Brewing will celebrate each new year by brewing Vintage Ale on our anniversary. As a vintage product, we estimate this ale will remain in good condition for a number of years.
The 2006 edition is down from 9.4% to 9.2%. In 2007 this went to 8%. In 2009 this went to 9.8%, and in 2011 it went to 10%.

All vintages of this barley wine (1999, 2000, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011) are to be rated on this page.

2011 Vintage. Lovely colour and pours beautifully. Good head retention. Very light carbonation, but with lovely threads. Plenty of nose, hints of fruit and burnt sugar. Tastewise, it’s not complex. Alcohol and sugar, with quite a long bitter finish. Looks and smells excellent, but the taste doesn’t live up to the promise. Maybe needs a few years?

Fiche technique Style: Barley WineFormat: 341 mlTaux d?alcool : 10%Température: 13°C - 15°CMalts: Munich

11.5oz bottle, which came in a cool coin-bank cardboard tube. 2009 vintage (20th anniversary). Labeled 9.8%. Mostly hazy dark amber color, with lots of dark yeast particles suspended in the body. Thin minimal ring of off-white head, leaves a couple bits of lace. Big dark fruit, raisin, caramel malt aroma. Hints of fig and chocolate. Plums and prunes. Light hint of spice. Not much else to the aroma aside from that, besides some papery flavor that I associate with oxidization.. Taste is moderate bitter, light to moderate sweet, with a big weird spicy bigger heat at the end that makes it hard to take more than small sips. Bigger body, kind of slick. Very light carbonation. Not a very enjoyable nor easy to drink experience. Should have been drank much sooner, probably.

2013 edition. This bottle is a screw-top!? Whacky to put a barley wine in that methinks. Clear dark gold body with very modest thin head on top. Heavy hoppiness and alcohol on the nose, fruitiness to thanks to that good ol’ ten percent. Flavour is a lot of caramel and chewy sweetness with some fruity fusel in there. Meaty mouthfeel. A little too overbearing.

Rich heavy scent, sweet candy fruity scent. Very strong smell with slight alcohol. This is 2013 vintage, and it could be older to smooth it out. Winey in the mouth with some burning, lots of flavours, slight bitterness not as sweet as it smells. Full bodied. Tastes like rich malty beer, good to share.

[2012] 341ml bottle. Hazy golden orange with a frothy off-white head. Flavors are sweet malts, dried fruits, salted caramel and brown sugar with grassy notes. Medium to full body, soft carbonation, syrupy texture. Warm and bitter finish.
