COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Also known as St.Ambroise Millésimée.

In honour of our tenth anniversary, McAuslan Vintage Ale has been brewed to continue the centuries-old tradition of strong ales and barley wines. Vintage Ale is rich and malty, with a surprisingly well balanced and clean hop finish provided by classic Goldings hops. The ale is unfiltered and derives its orange hue from wheat malt blended with pale and Munich malts. The malts also provide a hints of caramelized fruit reminiscent of a Christmas pudding.
McAuslan Brewing will celebrate each new year by brewing Vintage Ale on our anniversary. As a vintage product, we estimate this ale will remain in good condition for a number of years.
The 2006 edition is down from 9.4% to 9.2%. In 2007 this went to 8%. In 2009 this went to 9.8%, and in 2011 it went to 10%.

All vintages of this barley wine (1999, 2000, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011) are to be rated on this page.

UPDATED: AUG 1, 2009 2009. Good god im in heaven! Beautiful red amber, touch of green. lovely yellow head. Nose; sweet spices, candy, orange ju-jubes?, licorice, floral. Flavs; true heavenly bliss, i near cried as it touched my lips. Good start, perfect middle, fantastic ending. Very well done, balanced to perfection! After 3 months, it darkened in colour, and the floral notes started to take over the scent. Still heavy on the orange ju-jubes though. And tasted better than the first one! Perfect!

UPDATED: DEC 20, 2006 Very very good tasting experience. Rich beer. The beautiful red amber colour gives it a luxurious apparence. I can taste caramel malts and sugar. The McAuslan Brewing did a great work for this one. (2000 edition) Another very good tasting experience. Nice brown-ruby colour with a nice head. Some caramel flavour again but the final is more bitter than the 2000 edition. Also tasted grapefruit. (2006 edition)

Huge and warmfelt thanks to DOUGSHOEMAKER for treating Jadoreblanche and I to a bottle of this nectar! Bottle # 6173- Pours a deep orange body, topped by a creay beige head that sits around, and locks that flavour in. Lots of carbonation here too. Aroma is of prunes/rasins, some alcohol, malts, yeast, and spices. Reminds me of a port. Complex! Taste is bittersweet, rasins, vinious, spicy. Tonnes of malt. Creamy mouthfeel, bitter aftertaste. Very warming. Great complexity of flavours and feelings. There’s really so muich going on here, it is hard for me to fathom. Complex in every aspect. My idea of what a barley wine should be! Way to go McAuslan! Thanks again Doug, I owe ya one for this.

Whoa!! Heavy hitter. Delicious too. Poured with a great, cream colored, foamy, frothy, thick head that lasted a while and lots of lace. Color is a lovely, clear copper amber. Aroma is a fragrant mix of caramel, malt, taffy, fruit. Flavor is the same but with large sweetness tempered with a little bitterness. Full, round, and thick in body and great carbonation to cut the sweet. Finish is like flavor and slowly tapers in good length. Be nice to get some more and lay them by.

The McAuslan Vintage 2001 has a lot in common with Sophia Loren: a sexy Ruby red beer. There is a lot of malt and caramel tastes in this marvel. Each mouthful brings it's load of pleasure resulting in a syrupy dense and rich aftertaste. Definitely the kind of treat that you want to keep for a shaggy moment with your loved one.

2001 bottle shared with my brother DYCSoccer17. Slightly hazy plum colored pour with medium light tan head. Sugary, deep caramel, delicious aroma. Nice vineous notes in the nose. This is velvety smooth, absolutely wonderful. Beginning is subdued fruit, pit fruit, plums, raisins, etc. Middle is sugary sweet, with just a bit of warmth from the alcohol, although the alcohol is nearly undetectable. This is truely the best barleywine I have had to date. Thanks Rastacouere for this gem!

2001 Vintage. It’d been a while since I’d had this, but a friend picked up a bottle in Montreal and a got the opportunity to try it again. Oh. My. God. It was a revelation in a glass, especially having had the chance to age for four years, it was absolutely delicious. You can practically chew this one, and it has a fantastic caramel, dried fruit nose and flavour. Just simply amazing.

12 oz bottle 2001 thanks to Sasquach 911. Murky Brown with medium floaties. Ok head faded quickly. Very Malty aromas. Heavy molassas, raisin, prune, roasted sugars. Deicious!!!! Chocolate on the flavor, more dark fruit. Some subtle spicing. More Caramel in the finish. Hoppiness is great. Not too much bitterness. Awesome stuff. Thanks a billion Francios!!!!!!!

Vintage 2006

Pours a cloudy orange with an off-white head. Strong butterscotch aroma, creamy and buttery with notes of alcohol. Aroma is strong but well-balanced. Sweet butterscotch malt and light diacetyl. Finish with a faint tartness, and sharp, citrusy hops. Silky smooth body with perfect carbonation. What a treat of a beer - many thanks to HogTownHarry for the bottle!

Delicieuse biere... J ai une caisse de 12 qui vieilli... ainsi qu une 2006... 2007: A bit cloudy because of the yeast. Malty side is quite evident (caramel, brown sugar, candied fruits). Alcohol notes. Good hop bittering and aromas which lets the malty backbone get throught easily. My favorite BW yet, even beats Dieu du Ciels Solstice dhiver. I have a case of 12 of these aging and a 1 2006.
