Commercial Description:
Also known as St.Ambroise Millésimée.

In honour of our tenth anniversary, McAuslan Vintage Ale has been brewed to continue the centuries-old tradition of strong ales and barley wines. Vintage Ale is rich and malty, with a surprisingly well balanced and clean hop finish provided by classic Goldings hops. The ale is unfiltered and derives its orange hue from wheat malt blended with pale and Munich malts. The malts also provide a hints of caramelized fruit reminiscent of a Christmas pudding.
McAuslan Brewing will celebrate each new year by brewing Vintage Ale on our anniversary. As a vintage product, we estimate this ale will remain in good condition for a number of years.
The 2006 edition is down from 9.4% to 9.2%. In 2007 this went to 8%. In 2009 this went to 9.8%.

2007 bottle. Pale amber beer. Aroma is sweet and lightly lagerish with a lightly honeyish character. Quite a dirty aroma with light nutty character. Peach and apricot with a hint of soft spicy bitterness. Not sure if age will help, but it definitely needs something. These guys can do much better than this.

341ml bottle. 2006 vintage, 9.2%abv. thanks to Glouglouburp for the bottle. pours a light reddish brown with creamy off white head. aroma is pretty oxidized with light fruits and well its actually quite grainy. flavor is rather sweet, apple and grape peels, sweet toffee and cookie notes. body is a bit thin and carbonation is pretty low. more age will probably help and hopefully dry this out a bit. a decent but overly sweet english bw.

A rich copper colour with a full head. Inviting aroma of hops and alcohol. Nicely blalnced flavour, a little more bitter and less sweet than most barley wines but excellent nonetheless.

Tasted in Toronto. Obtained from LCBO as part of the winter warmers series. Tasted in a English pint glass. Pours slightly cloudy, rust / deep amber colour. Nice medium white foamy head which is well retained in the glass. Aroma is quite hoppy, grassy, soapy. Bitter with subtle hints of caramel malt and alcohol. Flavour is very rich. Hints of raisin, holiday pudding, brandy. Finishes with a nice bitterness.

341ml Bottle: 2007 edition, found a surprise couple bottles at an LCBO that wasn’t promising any on their site. Pours a great deep brown and orange colour, quite a substantial foamy head. The aroma is strong and enjoyable, a burst of alcohol with notes of fruit and spice to be found: plum, grape, and caramel come to mind. The flavour is very, very hoppy and bitter; not as balanced I would have hoped, with some of the caramel and fruits to be found. I hate to slag on a 99 but my guess is it can stand some more time in the tube. Thankfully I bought a second and I’ll have to revisit this some time down the road.

Amber but thick, hazy with a rich thick head and plenty of lacing to boot. The only comparison I’ve tried to the "vintage ale" style is Fullers and this is quite comparable. Rich aroma with a mix of fruit, malt, and earthy hops. The flavour is comparable, a little peach, malt and earthy hops, just like the smell. Chewy taste and full bodied, very nice and smooth.
