3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Burnt copper in colour, thin white head, but it lasts well. Pleasant nose of caramel and citrus fruit. Medium to full bodied, nice malty palate with the citrussy notes of the hops appearing on the finish, these linger for a while...nice! A good 5% brew, one I’d buy again...this one was from Tesco, Galashiels.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
500ml bottle at Street Brews Café St Julian’s Malta. Served cold in a 1/2 glass, probably too cold for the style. Dark brown, with an off-white head that died pretty quickly. A bit of malt aroma escaped the big freeze, and I could discern a pretty decent fruit and nut flavour. Needs a re-rate at a slightly higher temperature. (Would have given it time to warm, but was on a deadline.)

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Maker: St. Austell Brewery, St. Austell, England ***
Beer: Admiral’s Ale (bottle-conditioned, 500ml) ***
Style: Premium Bitter/ESB ***
ALC.VOL.: 5.0% ***
"This premium bottle-conditioned ale has been uniquely brewed using our own Cornish Gold malt. Locally grown barley is traditionally malted using a special kilning process which develops a deeper intensity of colour and flavour than ordinary barley malt. Blended with both Styrian Golding and Cascade hops, the result is a deep bronze ale with a delicious rich biscuit flavour and a wonderful spicy aroma." [brewer’s notes] ***
Colour: Deep, slightly hazy copper; huge, fluffy off-white head. ***
Nose: Caramel, biscuity malts, red berries. a hint of sweet lemon. ***
Texture: Medium to fuill-bodied, not watery at all. A bit creamy. Medium carbonation. ***
Taste: Caramel, dark fruits, some bread, a hint of citrus and floral hops at the start. Hint of chocolate, too. More so towards the middle, with an overall slightly sweetish ring of bready malts and dark fruit. Modestly bitter finish, still malt-dominated, hints of fruit linger on. Aftertaste is long but not really bitter. More fruity and malty. ***
Impressions: Very, very good British ESB with bold flavours and some depth to it. Looks great, too. Eminently drinkable and characterful, almost on a par with Fuller’s ESB.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle, 500 ml. Pours amber-tinted ruby and clear, with a small amount of off-white head. Creamy and buttery on the nose, with a bit of vanilla and caramel lurking around; reminds me of sponge cake to an extent. Hints of dark fruits develop a bit later, shifting the overall aroma slightly into fruitcake territory. Not as sweet as expected taste-wise, though caramel is again prominent. Bread-ier notes emerge now, particularly towards the finish. Little bit non-deScript at some times which is disappointing. Finish is sticky caramel and molasses, with a little bitter edge. Palate-wise this is a decent medium with a bit of carb offsetting the otherwise smooth texture a bit. Would have liked more of those creamy or buttery notes to persist in the taste so I could have extended that cake metaphor/comparison a bit further, but a fine brew regardless.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
A mid to dark amber orange coloured beer with a frothy off white head. A potent malty aroma, biscuity and caramel with a touch of bready spice, then there’s a background hint of citrus fruit. Dry mouthfeel. The taste continues in the same vein as the aroma, bold malty flavours, caramel and malted milk biscuits, brining forth the spiciness. This in turn allows the zesty, citrusy hop element to come through. The finish is zesty with a malty background.
