Cask (handpump) at Sir Christopher Hatton, Holborn on 4 September 2012. More amber than pale in appearance. Loose off-white head. Slightly clammy, soft malt on the nose. Quite earthy on the palate. A touch buttery in aroma and flavour. I was expecting something a bit zesty and golden but it had as much of a traditional bitter feel. Acceptable, but both St Austell and Nicholson’s can do better than this. Maybe not in the greatest nick so flagged for re-rate.

UPDATED: JAN 29, 2013 Cask (Buttermarket, Canterbury)
Black tea aroma. Pub seems to smell of ammonia, or is it just this beer? Slightly citrussy retronasals. Mid orange, tiny head. Dry bitter bite, a bit perfumey in the hop department. Finish has soft light grains at first, but more tingly bitter biting hops later. Simple, but tasty.
Rerate: Cask (Mitre, Cambridge)
Gold, nice head. Some fruits in the aroma, but not a lot. Restrained but pleasant hopping. Session beer. 3.2+

Handpull at Sir Christopher Hatton. Clear light amber with a small frothy off-white diminishing head. Light apricot, quite grassy, a little mineral tang in taste and aroma - more bitterness in the taste. Average body, light carbonation, a tad papery in the finish. Mehh.

House beer at Victoria Hotel in Leeds, half pint on hand pump. Crystal clear, golden brown body. Bright naked surface. Smell of grass and semi-sweet malts. Grainy malts and citrus in the flavour profile. Bittersweet ending. Clean tasting. Straightforward (11.07.2012).

Cask - The White Lion, Covent Garden. A clear golden amber beer with a small, mostly lasting lacy white head. OK biscuity pale malts & citric, grassy hop with some yeast in the background. Light to medium body, crisp carbonation and palate texture with a lingering, medium intensity bittersweet finish.

[cask, Greyfriars Bobby’s Bar, Drinkmonger Edinburgh] Clear golden amber with a decent white head. Aromas of grassy hop, lemon and some wet hay. I wasn’t expecting as much hop on the finish, but it was reasonably citrussy. Not Sierra Nevada territory, but a well-made English Pale Ale. There is, as you’d expect, a St Austell beer it reminds me of, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it [10072012]

Clear, slightly darker golden. Dense, near-cottage cheese head. A little light fruit beneath a largely musty front. Flat palate, watery. Nothing going on, but drinkable. (on cask at a pub SilkTork brought me on a walk around London)
