3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask, gravity dispensed, at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading. Intence black colour with a translucent, frothy, tan head; the aroma is sweet with heavily roasted malts; smooth and milky in the mouth, but also extremely dry with some smoky malt flavours; then some sharply bitter resinous hops giving a sustained finish. Quite a challenging pint, but well worth trying.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Hand pulled cask at the Monk’s retreat (JDW) Reading. Ruby black with a lively beige head in the peak of fresh condition. An explosion of all the flavours that one would expect from this exciting new style. Punchy citrus new world hops, full roast, good balancing malt base - the works! So complex for a beer of only 5%. Stunning!

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Very appealing to look at, jet black with a good head. Plenty of roasted malt - chocolate, coffee to it, hoppy. Not much of an IPA to be fair, more of a stout in my eyes.

3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
JDW Autumn Beer Fest 2011, Faversham. A tangy strong black beer. Good roasted notes accented by well chosen hops. A proper job. In black. Nice. (Just seen that this is intended to be a black IPA - though the hops are not assertive enough for that. This is a hoppier than average stout. Close your eyes and it tastes like a ruddy stout - nothing like a pale ale at all!)

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cask at The Crosse Keys, JDW, London. Pours a rich, black-brown with a creamy, tan head. There’s a nice roastiness in the aroma, along with pleasing pine notes. Light to medium. Sweet flavor, bit of burnt chocolate, plenty of roasted malts, earthy and piney bitterness. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Strong roasted malt finish, mild cocoa, some rubber, scorched earth, pine, tyres, very light citrus rind, some dark sugar. A pretty nice beer.
