Controversial? A contradiction in terms? Certainly a subject for discussion; is there such a thing as a black India Pale Ale? Whichever way you look at it, this beer is designed to challenge the sences. Black as stout, close your eyes and taste and this beer is classic IPA. Powerful hops dominate the restrained chocolate and coffee notes from the carefully selected roasted malt. Whatever you thought you knew about beer, we’ve just changed that!

On bottle from Vinmonopolet HAsle. Black color, good offwhite foam . Aromas of malt, some roasted aromas, hops and dried fruit;medium/low aroma intensity- especially low for style. Medium body & complexity. Good sourness, some bitterness- good balance. Enjoyable

Bottle on holiday in Cornwall. Black with a thick pale tan head. Aroma is decent, some fruity hops, tobacco, light chocolate. Flavour is citrus fruit, some roasted malts, tastes more English hops and I think it needs more American hops. Palate is reasonably smooth. Not bad but there are better in the style by a fair margin.

Medium beige head. Opaque black body goes hazy dark red at edges. Perfumy lacquer and earth aroma with sour, stale beer notes. Dry-acidic earthy roasty taste with sour, rotten finish. Awful. Must be infected, but tastes like the unspoiled version might be really nice. (0.5l bottle, from wine monopoly web order.)

Black body, low tanned head. Aroma of caramel, roast, chocolate and a low piny hop character. Malty taste with flowery hops, hazelnut and coffee. Quite maltheavy with a bit thick body and roasted finish.

Coffee, roasted malts and citrus in the aroma. Almost black with a tan head. Light to medium sweet and medium bitter. This one has some sourness to it. Light to medium body with a average carbonation. Overall OK, but not sure i like the orangey sourness.

From tap @ Opsahlgården, Kongsberg. Near black. Creamy tanned head. Soft malt aroma featuring mild chocolate and gentle citrussy hops. Clean-tasting. Chocolate, creamed coffe, and firm citus-fruity and grassy bitterness. Dry and smooth on the palate. Easy drinkable, fully balanced.

On tap @ Henrik, Bergen. Pours a dense black body with a large creamy off-white head. Aroma is burnt toast, coffee, leather, licorice and hints of grass and faint chlorine in the back. Taste is licorice, burnt toast, coffee, hints of straw and grass. Medium body and carbonation. Much more like a herbed-up stout than a BIPA, but still quite decent.

0.5l clear bottle. Deep deep dark brown - almost black non the pour this. It has a nice medium sized dark chocolate brown head that’s leaving some nice lacing. The nose has a spicy touch to it. I get wet paint, Christmas spices, a good form of cardboard, chocolate paper and some dark grassy hint all the way in the back. The taste has this faint sourness. Not sure if it’s meant to be there, but never the less, it’s there. Really nice gentle oily on the mouthfeel and it’s softly carbonated. The source sourness is a bit disturbing to be honest, but it has other good elements. Chocolate and roasted malts as two of them, bitter cocoa is another. Lots of cold coffee bitter acidity in the aftertaste. Quite in balance I have to say but I feel no urgent rush to try again. 17.08.2013
