On tap at Kick. A black one, topped by a dense, light tan head leaving lacings. The aroma is faintly buttery, with caramel, dark chocolate and some lightly citrusy hops. Roasted flavor with chocolate and coffee. A pleasant bitterness chimes in, bringing some balance. Full body, soft and pleasant carbonation, rather dry. Lasting roasted finish. A proper beer indeed, although a bit buttery especially in the aroma. 130520

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 jookos (762) - Helsinki, FINLAND - MAY 9, 2013
Draught. Black. Pretty good black nose- has some green piney hops, and a soft roasted licorice coffee bean- kind of aroma. Body is med light. Is well bittered and has some resinous hoppy flavours. But with the roastedness it all becomes a bit burn rubbery, salt licorish, in a very sticky way. Not bad, but tje kind of flavours you’d see in a modern RIS. Bitter, long finish. Nice, but the burps makes me think I’ve had a salty RIS.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 LicoriceKing (29) - DENMARK - MAY 8, 2013
Black. Aroma: Hoppy. Pine, citrus, licorice and coffee. Taste: Caramel, bread, coffee, licorice, pine, citrus, roasty and salty. Light palate. This is such a nice beer, very drinkable, fairly low percentage and it has a lot of my favourite features in the Stout/Porter and IPA territory.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 jesperhammer (2221) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - MAY 8, 2013
08-MAY-2013, bottle @home, from Kvickly.
Black with a very creamy but also a little rough cappuchino head that laces and lasts.
Nice roast and hops. Not in your face but smooth and balanced. Coffee, soapy and grassy hops.
Creamy palate with soft carbonation making it very easy drining. This was a nice surprise. Could easily rebuy.

Cask (Gallows Bird, Espoo)
Lovely look - basically black, and with a smooth tightish beige head that sticks too and then slides down the glass. Lovely rich roast, on the side of burnt. A touch of something ginger too, that pushes clearly into 7 territory. Smooth in the mouth, super sull, and super smooth, but not without carbonation, there’s just a slight prickle of carbonation. Body is unmistakably burnt, but definitely not astringent. There’s sometimes a mashier backdrop that shows through - does say "I am a mix of different malts, each included for their own separate reason", and had less than perfect integration and coherence, beause of that. But I’m looking for tiny flaws in something that’s hugely correct, it’s nit-picking. Finish starts with some spicy fruits, softens to deep roast, then dries toa nice spicy peppery bitterness, not just hop, I suspect part of that’s the patent malt. All in all good, but invites enough scrutiny such that the "how could I make this better?" question begins to find answers quite quickly. But that’s a complement. A bad or average beer has the answer "don’t bother". Nice one - proper job!
