Controversial? A contradiction in terms? Certainly a subject for discussion; is there such a thing as a black India Pale Ale? Whichever way you look at it, this beer is designed to challenge the sences. Black as stout, close your eyes and taste and this beer is classic IPA. Powerful hops dominate the restrained chocolate and coffee notes from the carefully selected roasted malt. Whatever you thought you knew about beer, we’ve just changed that!

Hmm confused, is it possible to be pale and black ,its not stout or even porter! Lovely aroma of pineapple and strong floral hop flavour ,thin mouth feel like beer rather than stout .Initially not as malty as expected from the colour but the bitter malt flavour comes through in the end and lingers. Nice but not a patch on Proper job .

Hmm the smell is different, quite sweet for a dark beer , actually the taste is quite peculiar aswell. Quite thin for abv. Fairly bitter, seems both light and heavy at the same time. Strange beer this one, glad I tried it. I should report back or try again at some point ... No ok I’m struggling with this, the hop bitterness offsets the taste of the malts giving a strong liquorice taste. Where as the bitterness in other dark beers seems more like the roasted malts at work

Bottle from Tesco, drunk at home after a hard day. Yes this is ’proper black’, opaque with very little head or natural carbonation. Lots of heady roast malt, liquorice and beef gravy in the aroma. However, the taste doesn’t live up to the expectations of the smell. Bitter with burnt malt. Palate is watery, with a bitter and slightly acrid aftertaste. Still good although it starts better than it ends.

500ml bottle, thanks to Mark. Pours black, thin receding tan head. Aroma is smoky roast. Taste continues, with a smooth full body, some cocoa. I’m glad others have picked up a creamy tropical mango element, which creeps up on the finish. I actually bought a mango earlier today and I imagine this would go well with that. Too late I guess. Very nice this.

500ml bottle not sure where from, been sitting around since before Christmas - Proper shocked with this. Thick black body, perfectly lasting head. Nose is a smoky tropical fruit kebab, all sorts going on in there, sour, sweet, chocolate, coffee. Taste is the same, thick rounded mouthfeel, long on the way out. Stunned. Expected it to be meh.

Pours a pitch black color, topped with a medium sized and nicely lasting head, creamy and beige. Pleasant roasty aroma, mild, with some chocolatey notes and sweet tropical fruits coming after you. Taste starts with mild roastiness, moderate bitterness, slight fruity feel to it Some mild coffee notes in the aftertaste. Medium light body. A very decent BIPA.

Bottle from Tesco. Pours almost stout black with medium tan frothy (and lingering) head. Aroma is citrus hops and roasted malt. Very nice balance between bitter and sweet with a lingering finish. Very decent Black IPA

Served in a tulip from a 500ml bottle. Pours almost black opaque colour with a tan head which slowly diminishes leaving a decent amount of lacing in the glass. Aroma is powerfully hoppy with coffee, dark chocolate and liquorice notes. Taste is slightly acidic coffee and dark fruits with a nice long lingering medium bitter finish. Oily texture with soft carbonation. Very pleasant and enjoyable black IPA.

50cl bottle at home from Tesco, Redditch. Nose is light roasted malty. Body is pitch black, head is small, beige, mostly diminishing, good lacing. Aroma is dark chocolate, toast, mild coffee, dried fruits. Light sweet, medium to heavy bitter. Finish is long lasting hoppy medium to heavy bitter. Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation. Quite easy dessert beer, simple porter-ish black IPA, nice one.
