Controversial? A contradiction in terms? Certainly a subject for discussion; is there such a thing as a black India Pale Ale? Whichever way you look at it, this beer is designed to challenge the sences. Black as stout, close your eyes and taste and this beer is classic IPA. Powerful hops dominate the restrained chocolate and coffee notes from the carefully selected roasted malt. Whatever you thought you knew about beer, we’ve just changed that!

Bottle. Black colour with a medium light brown head. Rich aroma of toffee, caramel, light roastedness and bitter hops. Nice beer.

From the bottle. Velvety black with a lovely caramel head. Nice floral aroma. Seemingly thick but light on the tongue with decent bitterness. Nutty caramel and coffee notes.

Dark, stout-like pour. Strong hops come through over roasted malt, chocolate and a little coffee. Gorgeous beer.

Bottle cold at home served in the Budweiser version of an English Pint: black as the Ace of Spades with a creamy tan head. I remember being intrigued by a beer which seemed to combine liquorice and grapefruit, back in the day and that’s the aroma here. Flavours are the same, with bitter dark chocolate, and burnt sugartoast. Smooth mouth feel, long fruity finish. 4 for £6 at Tesco. Get stuck in.

50ml bottle bb04/2017, BierH. Bref: rustically confident UK stout with plenty of baseline character goes pleasantly Black IPA spicing with wise doses of C-hops. A beer well-rested within its tradition to venture toward experiment. Carameled espresso in aroma doused with orange, citrus peel and pineapple sliced candy, cocoa-coated Pimm’s rsp. jaffa cakes. About the same in flavour on the UK natural real ale mouthfeel I have come to adore and crave. Wonderfully relaxed US-Hopped-up UK Stout.

Stout like, roast, hoppy herbal, modern. Bit too clean perhaps, but very nice to drink. Great looks too. (50cl bottle shared by Darren in Cambridge)

Bottle from a Tesco in Somerset. Black with a nice frothy beige head. Aroma of choclate, coffee and citrus. The taste has citrus and spice before some nice coffee and choclate in the finish. Could be hoppier, but pretty decent.

UPDATED: JUL 4, 2016 Very light aroma, malty and coffee. Opaque, very dark brown and with a bit of creamy beige head. Quite a bit of malt taste, some chocolate and coffee. Great flavor and not too overwhelming. I have a slight aversion to black IPAs and find most to be much too strong in flavor and sometimes burnt tasting. I wouldn?t call it powerfully hoppy but it has a slight bitterness to it. This is delicious and easy to drink. I?d welcome seconds.

Tasted from the tap on the 02/07/2016. Almost opaque black colour with medium foamy beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, some hops, licorice and dark berries. Taste is medium coffee and intense roasted malts. Some hops too. Next one please!
