Controversial? A contradiction in terms? Certainly a subject for discussion; is there such a thing as a black India Pale Ale? Whichever way you look at it, this beer is designed to challenge the sences. Black as stout, close your eyes and taste and this beer is classic IPA. Powerful hops dominate the restrained chocolate and coffee notes from the carefully selected roasted malt. Whatever you thought you knew about beer, we’ve just changed that!

On tap at Kick. A black one, topped by a dense, light tan head leaving lacings. The aroma is faintly buttery, with caramel, dark chocolate and some lightly citrusy hops. Roasted flavor with chocolate and coffee. A pleasant bitterness chimes in, bringing some balance. Full body, soft and pleasant carbonation, rather dry. Lasting roasted finish. A proper beer indeed, although a bit buttery especially in the aroma. 130520

Das pechschwarze Bier hat ein sehr ausgeprägtes Aroma: Holz, Lakritze, Medizin. Letzteres wirkt leider lange nach - das muss man schon mögen.

Bottled. More or less black colour with a small beigeish brown head, that leaves some lace. Aroma is coffee, roasted malts, some slight liquorice and a bit ashy notes. Flavour is very similar, but has a nice strong citrusy and grassy hop profile to it. Also mild black currant to it. Interesting take on Black IPA.

bottle. dark ruby, almost black with a small head. aromas of coffe and chocolate and bitterness of hops, that’s what you expect and yes this beer has it. but there is also sourness which confused me a little.

Ristet og humle. Som en stout men bare med mere bitterhed. Ret klassisk stout. Ikke meget særligt. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On bottle from Vinmonopolet HAsle. Black color, good offwhite foam . Aromas of malt, some roasted aromas, hops and dried fruit;medium/low aroma intensity- especially low for style. Medium body & complexity. Good sourness, some bitterness- good balance. Enjoyable

Bottle on holiday in Cornwall. Black with a thick pale tan head. Aroma is decent, some fruity hops, tobacco, light chocolate. Flavour is citrus fruit, some roasted malts, tastes more English hops and I think it needs more American hops. Palate is reasonably smooth. Not bad but there are better in the style by a fair margin.

Medium beige head. Opaque black body goes hazy dark red at edges. Perfumy lacquer and earth aroma with sour, stale beer notes. Dry-acidic earthy roasty taste with sour, rotten finish. Awful. Must be infected, but tastes like the unspoiled version might be really nice. (0.5l bottle, from wine monopoly web order.)
