3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Kick. A black one, topped by a dense, light tan head leaving lacings. The aroma is faintly buttery, with caramel, dark chocolate and some lightly citrusy hops. Roasted flavor with chocolate and coffee. A pleasant bitterness chimes in, bringing some balance. Full body, soft and pleasant carbonation, rather dry. Lasting roasted finish. A proper beer indeed, although a bit buttery especially in the aroma. 130520

3.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
"Black as stout", with dirty dark beige creamy head. Aroma is fruity hops, plums, smoky malts, some cacao and grass. Palate is full-bodied and slightly thick. Carbonation is smooth and flattish. Taste is mainly bitter and dry , with roasty malty taste. There’s also acrid raw cacao beans taste, IPA hoppiness is intact, however not bringing enough fruitiness. Finish is tart, bitter and papery. Overall, not exactly a balanced IPA (black or not), but the mix of styles is interesting enough for another one.

Dark, almost opaque black color, good creamy brown head. Toasted, licorice aroma. Medium-bodied. Licorice, some burnt malts, maybe even slightly smokey. Slightly milky-lactosy with some late bitterness. Restless.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
0.5L bottle from Vinmonopolet. Pours black, with one inch thick beige head. Aroma had malt, toffee, stewed fruits, coffee and licorice. Too bad it fell through on the taste, it is kinda sweet and sour, but the sour notes feels quite misplaced. It also feels too thin on the palate. Don’t think I will try this again.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle at home. Has a totally black colour with a small, light beige head. Fruity hops in the aroma at first before roasted malt and dark chocolate rolls over. In addition I find oak, licorice, dark berries and soy sauce. The flavour has some fruit first and then more roastedness, sour berries and ash in the end. Has a slick and silky mouth feel, and a light to medium bitterness. One of a kind Black IPA, the flavour appears a bit unbalanced in my opinion.

2.2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
From bottle. Colour, totally black. Very dry, I would say sour. This sourness dominates. Little discernable aromas. Nothing in common with an IPA, more like a much too dry dry stout. Disappointing. Looking at the rating just below mine, also from Bergen, I can’t help but wondering if Bergen has received a bad batch.

UPDATED: SEP 13, 2013 20.08.2013, 0,5l bottle @ home:
Nice slightly brown creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly rich, dark malts, coffee, hops, licorice, caramel, leafs, dark sugar, pine needles, rubber. Taste is.....OMG! What the heck is this?! Smells so good, and the taste is just awful! If I diddn’t know it’s still 1,5 year till best before date on this one, I’d rather say it was 5 years past. It’s just watery sour, one dimensional, metallic, harsh and burnt. Among the worst beers I’ve ever tasted...

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
(Keg at Hilpeä Hauki, 20130716) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and light brown. Aroma had fruitiness and liquorice. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, fruitiness, liquorice, ash and bitterness. Aftertaste was ashy and bitter. Too burnt and roasty to be called as a Black IPA. Still nice to drink.
