Smugglers Grand Cru is brewed for strength and is aged for a minimum of 9 months in whisky casks sent to Cornwall especially for this purpose from the Tomintoul Distillery in Perthshire, Scotland. This ageing process adds complexity to the beer , with hints of smooth oaky vanilla, toffee and spirit underpinning the notes of sweet and spicy forest fruits derived from the base beer. Finally, to finish, the beer is bottled using the methode Champagnoise at the Camel Valley Vineyard on Cornwall. The unique qualities of Smugglers Grand Cru were recently recognised when it was awarded the Gold Medal in the speciality beer category at the London Quality Drinks Awards 2011.

750mL corked bottle. Vintage 2011 Bottle #500 Inadvertently forked out almost $50 for this bottle - mark it down as a Birthday present to myself Pours a hazy bronze body. Big beige head foams up, but doesn’t stick around. Aroma dominated by malt characters of toffee, toasted nuts, with aged characters of tawny port, toasty yeast autolysis and dried fruit come through. Effervescent carbonation without having too much bite, cutting through a rich body Palate starts sweet, good amount of slightly burnt toffee and biscuity malt, light bit of toasted oak, continuing on with dried apricot and raisin, finishing with sublte yeasty notes of stonebaked bread, earthy spice and vinous red fruits. A touch of bitterness on a prolonged warming finish. Not sure if it’s the age, but this beer seems to promise a bit more than it gives. Sure, it’s very nice, but I was expecting much more.
