NOTE: This is an entirely different beer to the the Smugglers Ale launched in 2006 and now discontinued.
A very special bounty indeed, Smugglers is a unique blend of dark ale and oak-aged barley wine. This strong beer is brewed and racked into oak whisky casks before being hidden away in our cellars. During its long slumber the beer undergoes an extraordinary transformation, emerging rich and complex with hints of whisky, creamy vanilla, toffee and spice.
A blend of oak aged barley wine and dark ale brewed from natural Cornish spring water, Maris Otter pale ale malt, Crystal and Roasted malts, dark brewing sugar, First Gold, Fuggle, and Styrian Golding hops, coriander and our own Brewer’s yeast.

On tap @ Kick. Unclear, almost murky amber with a small but dense off-white head. Nice aroma of malt, dry fruit, caramel, some wood and slightly acidic. Flavor is smooth, sweet caramel malt, dry fruit, wood, vanilla, some bitterness and toffee. Fine body, not full body but in balance. Decent aftertaste. A really smooth and tasty one this, highly enjoyable.

Bottle from Brewhouse Brisbane May 2014. Aroma carries spiced fruit notes while the flavour is a bit more powerful. Raisins and other dried fruit come to mind.

Bottle from Tesco. Poured a clear copper, with a halo of off white head. Aroma of sour fruit, cherry and brown sugar. Was really not expecting the sourness, didn’t really seem to fit, but the bottle was well in date and pasteurised, so I don’t think that it was off. Toasted malt flavours, with some peal and tart fruit. Finish was sour, acidic, with some grain, dried fruit and toffee. Very strange and all in all, not particularly nice.

500 ml bottle. Pours a clear ruby red with a small off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, fruit and oak. Sweet flavour of toffee, fruit, vanilla, malt and a hint of whiskey in the finish. Medium body with oily texture and soft carbonation.

Draught @ Sherlock Holmes, Aarhus. Pours slightly hazy dark amber with small white head. Clear aroma of malt, butter and fruit. Sweetish, malty and fruity flavour, with notes of butter and yeast. Dusty and sourish aftertaste. OK but would be much better without the buttery notes.

Bottle from Bottle Bank, Falmouth, Cornwall. Deep dark brown with a medium pale brown frothy head. Aroma of tobacco, roasted malts, metal, prunes. Some hops in flavour, little caramel, more metal. Did not excite me in any way.

Bottle at the City Pub, Goteborg, 21/03/14. Kind of weird drinking this in a bar in Sweden, not my call, but a rates a rate ! Hazed orange amber with a good sized off white covering. Nose is bitter fruit, biscuit crumble, dark malt. Taste comprises dark fruit rind, biscuit malt, fruit loaf, light spice. Medium bodied, fince carbonation, semi drying close. So so offering, I imagine this bottl may have seen better days!
