Amber with an offwhite head. Aroma from tar, chocolate, licorice and some plum. Spicy flavor with tar and chocolate. Quite salyt, especially in the finish. More like a stout than abbey dubbel, but still quite good.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Ernest (5115) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - AUG 15, 2002
Head is initially large, frothy, off-white, mostly lasting. Body is murky dark reddish-brown, dense particles of all sizes, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, caramel), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of licorice, coriander, orange, and toffee. Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Finish is moderately bitter, moderately acidic. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly astringent. Great aroma, but the flavor profile is a little sour and dull.
2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 Hildigöltur (5107) - København, DENMARK - NOV 24, 2003
Brown coloured. Peppery aroma. The flavour is rather thin and yeasty. A very boring Belgian ale.

UPDATED: JUN 11, 2008 Cola brown with cream froth. Drank this over a 2 hour period, and it got better. Liquorice and yeast extract giving way to a chocolate malty smoothness. Quite a heady orange-accented aroma with dusting of ginger or anise-like spice, wet leaves and chocolate. Hops detectable. Better without the ’delicate sparkle’. Creamy, balanced and packed with Belgian spice on the re-rate. Would make a cracking house beer- big on flavour but not overly demanding. Really decent bruin/dubbel.

Drunk alongside La Gauloise's brune. Frothy head which settled into swampy pockets of the universe in creation. Nice. A muddy, unpleasant colour - rather like raw sewerage. Yeasty nose, much stronger and richer than the Gauloise. Some vanilla and cloves arise first, then the sweet malt comes through, mostly in the form of brown sugar. A soft, creamy body with very low carbonation. A strange woody, tannic spice that I couldn't pin down, along with a mild sweetness and gentle coffee. A very soothing drink. Hints of caramel and wet leather. A delicious, creamy and delicate brew with bags of wandering, indefinable aromas and flavours. I liked this better than the La Gauloise.
