11.5 oz bottle. Poured a deep reddish amber with a large foamy light-tan head, leaving moderate lacing throughout. The head was so dramatic as to warrant extra care on my part upon opening to avoid spillage, and spillage with this beer is nothing short of sinful. To put it frankly, St. Bernardus ABT 12 is the greatest beer I have ever tasted, surpassing Chimay Grande Reserve, Westmalle Dubbel, and perhaps even Gulden Draak, which had previously held something of a tie for my favorite beer. This divine ale carried aromas of cedar and warm malts, as well as a hint of the bold fruit notes inherent in the flavor. The accents carried dramatic flavors of pear, banana, and apple, as well as alcohol, cedar, hickory, and Danish bleu. The mouthfeel was especially pleasing - thick, creamy, and smooth with only mild bitterness considering its ABV. The only drawback (and quite a trivial one it is) is a slightly silty appearance. But who said a beer has to be beautiful to taste fantastic? The beer was very fittingly accompanied by a plate of organic dark wheat bread and some Australian “Roaring 40’s” cow’s milk blue cheese (which was, coincidentally, also the greatest blue cheese I have ever tasted). *For posterity’s sake I wrote this review prior to eating the bread and cheese, so the Danish bleu accents aforementioned were strictly from the beer. Highly, HIGHLY recommended.

Appearance is pretty dark, but still lets some light through. Best non-trappist abbey-beer around. RHeastings (391), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 5, 2009 Enjoyed via 12oz and 750ml bottles. Pours a wonderful medium brown with an ivory head. Nose is one of wondrous malt complexity. Palate is initially of dark fruits, crystal and Cara-Munich malt sweetness and just the slightest sweetness on the finish. Overall, this is potentially #1 on my all-time beer list. An unbelievable example. War4soccer (115), , Nevada, USA

Pours dark amber with a huge amount of floaties, far more than I’ve seen in any other St. Bernardus beers. Aroma is caramel, grapes, fruit. Flavor is completely smooth. Hard to describe exactly what’s going on with the flavor - there’s a lot going on with this beer. Very good. ben4321 (984), Rockville, Maryland, USA

Aroma: Strong fruitiness, complex.
Appearance: Deep brownish color, thick head
Flavor: As it warms the flavors separate enough to show off the excellent complexity that lies within.
Palate: Thick, creamy mouthfeel
Overall Impression:
Really solid Quad, at first taste I was thinking this one was way overrated, but now I’d just say a tad, the flavors really come through as it warms up. Give it credit for nice strong flavors, you can also taste the alcohol flavors, but there is some nice fruit complexity as well. Can’t say I’m disappointed for my 500th Rating. Dark brown with light shining through the edges making them appear copper. Some small yeast remnants are visible in the bottom of the glass. Builds a very thick inch and half high tan head that sticks to the glass. Aroma is slight fruit, sweet malt and creamy vanilla. Taste is thick, sweet creaminess on the front of the tongue tapering to a nice roasted bitter toffee flavor. Awesome.
