Commercial Description:
The absolute top quality in the hierarchy of the St. Bernardus beers. It is also the beer with the highest alcohol content (10.50 %). A dark ivory coloured beer with a high fermentation. The show piece of the brewery. Thanks to its soft and unconditionally genuine aroma, the beer can be smoothly tasted. The Abt has a very fruity flavour.

From dainty bottle, pours nearly opaque brown with a velvety beige compact head. Aroma is pronounced dark fruit and some spice. Flavor is complicated. Orval cherry fruity plus dark fruit on top of kilned malt and brown sugar, plus moderate warmth (though no alcohol burn) and wafer cookies. Actually I prefer it at the colder temp of mid-40’s where the effervescent yeasty mouthfeel and the spicy brown sugar flavors are the most pronounced. Start there and take your time...changes along the way. (I can see why they added Grotten to their line-up).

Pours dark brown in color with medium head. The aroma is of fruit and malt with the alcohol also very apparent. Good palate that’s both crisp and smooth. Taste is sweet and very fruit forward with the high alcohol content barely noticeable.

Bottle from Byrne’s Clitheroe. Murky brown colour, large head that, disappointingly, vanished rapidly . Alcohol evident in the aroma along with sweet malt and rich fruit. Complex flavours: spice (pepper and clove), light vanilla, rich fruit, yeast and muscovado. Very pleasant warming effect from the alcohol. Very light palate for its strength. Lovely.

750 ml bottle. Pours a murky dark reddish brown with a huge angry head. Nose is malts, dark fruit and spices. Active mouthfeel. Strong carbonation that fades in the mouth, then goes down smooth. Fairly heavy body that coats your tongue and mouth. Complex flavor, mostly dark fruit, raisin, dates and prunes. Also malt and nuts. The 10.5% abv was well hidden. Very good, complex brew. I don’t really agree with some of the excitement shown by some fellow raters, " best beer in the world" and all that.

On tap at the Yard House in Long Beach, CA. Served in a goblet glass. Aroma is faint of malt, with some sweetness and fruit. Color is a deep red amber with a big beige head that has some staying power. Flavor is full and rich. Cherry fruit dominates the malt. Full, rich and smooth. Extremely drinkable for the gravity. This is a fantastic beer. Complex, rich and decadent.

Clove and dried fruit aromas on the nose. Candy apples. Really complex. Nice. Thick, mouth-coating almost milky texture. Flavors fall a little short of the aroma and mouthfeel. A Nice flick of spice on the finish. Overall, well-done.
