The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Summary: The last of a four pack St. Bernardus sampler. Tasty, just not an everyday thing for me.

Bottle. Murky ruby red, off white head which sticks heavily to the glass. Christmas pudding, cherry, some rum, vinous aspects and candy sugar. Similarly sweet flavours of Christmas pudding, cherry, candy sugar, deep caramel malt and cola which works toward a really enjoyable hop profile that allows for a great juxtaposition between sweet and bitter. The abv sticks out but that's to be expected in an Abt. Great beer.

Pours a nice mohagany with a frothy off-white head which quickly fades. The aroma really smacks you in the face with red fruit, fruit cake and malt. Taste is sweet with cherry and spices with a great herbal finish. Carbonation is perfect light medium. Overall a fantastic beer!

750ml bottle. Pours a beautiful clear ruby with a two finger beige head of fine bubbles that soon disappeared. Aromas of red plum, dried dark fruits, light earthy mineral notes, hard candies, and fruit cake. Not too sweet with dark bread notes, raisins, light molasses, dark maple syrup, and some very obvious alcohol up front that leads into more molasses, hard candies, spice, and more boozyness and a bitter menthol-like hoppy finish. Excellent.

Is this my favourite beer? If Westvleteren is truly better, then it will be a while until I’ll be in that part of Belgium to find out. I can’t see our family holiday plans coinciding with Dark Lord day, and there are no signs of the Pliny family in my part of the English Midlands any time soon. But ... you can buy an extraordinary beer like this for less than you would pay for a pint of the lowest rank lager in a typical night club in a typical city like mine. Beer is good, isn’t it. This is really good. It looks great, with a dark mahogany colour topped with a persistent off- white head and good lacing. Great mouthfeel - medium bodied and creamy. Aroma, like some fantastic pudding is baking in the background. Taste - malt loaf, rum & raisin ice cream, prunes, herbs and spices. Maybe my favourite beer. Or is it Trappist Roquefort....?

Quadrupel ben fatto, con un gusto discretamente complesso, dominato da frutta scura, caramello, una sfumatura di uva sultanina e bacche, forse un tocco amarotico finale. Forte presenza alcolica, ma piuttosto ben bilanciata.

Very good, picked up a large bottle based on a recommendation. Pricey at $13 for a 750 ml, but strong beer. Would definitely get again. Best brown ale and highly carbonated.

Couleur brune-noire, bonne mousse crémeuse beige. Nez malté (un peu grillé) et vieux fruits. Gout fort malté et fruits noirs et alcool, petite amertume. super bien balancée, fin un peu de legere reglisse et caramel.

Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is not strong but nice with caramel, chocolate, fruits and slight spiciness. A full and rich beer, sweet and slightly bitter to balance. Very fizzy carbonation and a long finish. Delicious.

Bottle poured. Dark ivory brown color with a fluffy brown head. Caramel aroma with faint floral hops. Medium body with creamy texture. Unexpectedly sweeter than I thought it’d be with slight bitter after taste and a hint of caramel to the taste as well.
