The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

@ Lilla barkaby 6-1-7: rätt len och lite metallisk doft. Smaken är lätt maltig, en viss sötma och torkade nötter.

If you’ve had Chimay blue, this is a similar styled beer. What’s immediately notable is its surprising crispness at 10% ABV. You’d expect to smell and taste more alcohol, but what comes across, instead, is a crisp, toffee malt and fine effervescence. This isn’t my kind of beer--malty bases I can’t abide--but I can see why it’s popular. Chimay blue, in my inexperienced estimation of this style of beer, is slightly more flavorful.

We tried this beer on tap, and we found it less powerful in aromas than the bottled version. However, as it heates to ambiance temperature, the taste and aromas improve. It combines well with sweet things, like Roscón de Reyes.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Aromas of dark fruit, caramel, and yeast. Hazy, but a beautiful reddish-brown color and a thick, off-white, frothy head. Initially sweet, but with a slightly bitter-sweet finish. Alcohol comes through just slightly. Nice carbonation that dances on the tongue. Wonderful creamy texture.

A fruity aroma with a hint of plums. Pours a dark brown color with a thin tan head. A fruity taste of plums and dried fruit with a full bodied feel and slightly boozy finish.

Lots of fruit on the nose. Pure deep and dark with some lacing. Lots on the palate too. Some yeast. This has a nice finish. Impressive. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
