The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

From 750ml, poured into Belgian style tulip glass

Aroma: sweet malts, fruits, cherries,

Appearance: brown with red hues, hazy, big tan head with great retention

Taste: Heavy sweet, light bitter

Palate: full body, creamy, average carbonation, dry finish

Overall: Very creamy and smooth quad. Slight taste of alcohol, but it’s subtle against the complex sweetnesses. Aroma is very sweet, almost like fruit and cherries. Nice dark brown color with hazy/cloudy body and big tan head. A very solid quad with a slight bitterness that balances the heavy malty sweetness. I slightly prefer La Trappe over Abt12, but they’re both highly enjoyable.

2 bottles opened and tested in parallel in May 2015. one new purchased in the U.S. with a 2018 best before and one 8 years old purchased in Belgium with a 2011 best before date. The older has less head and is darker. Old has strong port and dried fruit aroma. New has minimal aroma but some similar notes. Old: plums, dried fruit, molasses. Slightly sweet and slick finish. Low carbonation. New: drier an similar notes but much less pronounced. Some more hoppy bitterness detectable but not strong. More effervescent mouthfeel. Old is significantly better and the basis of the review. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Saveur Bière. Froathy, thick head. Coke-brown body. Smells of syrup, caramel, citrus, almond. Bubbly fresh taste of plum, syrup, apple, salt, caramel and almond. A very lean sweet and bitter aftertaste which balances out the hight amount of alcohol. An amazing beer that never disappoints but took a surprisingly long time to actually rate!

330 ml bottle. Pours a cloudy, dark reddish brown with a small beige head. Sweet malty aroma of dried fruit, caramel, yeast and alcohol. Sweet malty flavour of dark fruit, liquorice, caramel, yeast and some bitterness with a dry, warming alcohol finish. Full body with an oily texture and fizzy carbonation. A complex and well balanced beer. Great for sipping.

Une des meilleures bières qu’il me soit donnée de boire. Il manque juste une longueur en bouche et ce petit quelque chose qu’apporte certaines autres trappistes de même calibre pour atteindre la perfection.
