| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 29, 2008 I drank this right after a westy 12 b/c i’ve heard it’s as close as you can get without going to the monestary. It is similar, but much more carbonation. nose is of candi sugar and slight alcohol. The high carbonation takes away from the taste. A very thin mouthfeel, though. hints of fruit, but just a tease. phishpond417 (1914), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 28, 2008 Finally- And on draught too! Pours a deep ruby red/mahogany with a large creamy almond coloured head. Aroma is fruity- black cherry, mangoe, brown sugar and raisins. Taste is semi sweet, again notes of dark, overripe fruits- apples, peaches and possilby a little bananna. Cloves and other spice is noticeable in the finish. Well carbonated, great structure holds up well in the mouth. muddy67 (3), Marietta, Georgia, USA does not count | 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Aug 28, 2008 There’s a reason I keep this one on tap at home and the price is totally justified when it hits your tongue. Huge malt aroma and flavor. Sweetness balanced out by high alcohol content and mild hop character. Dark fruits dominate this flavor along with yeasty spiciness. Please don’t drink it ice cold because you’re wasting your money. JCB (1741), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 27, 2008 11.2oz from Total Wine, Durham. Like all St. B beers, this one is hugely rich and flavorful. Over time I’ve become more impressed by top shelf quads, since it’s so hard to pull off the style without going overboard with boozy sweetness or without producing a beer with a thin body. This one’s got it going on, with a lustrous dark pour, a big nose of malts and ripe fruits, a gentle hint of near-smoke in there too. Flavors emerge patiently, like good wine or whiskey does, and there’s some faint bitterness in there that makes the beer even more complex and well rounded. Long lingering finish, a top notch quad. Alcohol pretty well hidden, barely present in tail end. Dark, great lacing. Full palate with a lot of mild dark fruit hints throught. Candy malt. Many layers on my palate. Aroma of grapes, dates. craftycarl21 (518), South Hero, Vermont, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Aug 25, 2008 pours a dark brown with a reddish tint- massive bubbly head, refuses to back down from the edge of the glass. Aroma is delicious- malty, sweet, dark fruit, raisin. Flavor is wondrous- alcohol is present, with malt, raisin, caramel, and plum- delicious stuff. Palate starts a bit bitter and rough, and then smooths out to a wonderfully creamy finish. Outstanding brew. ChainGangGuy (2544), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA

Appearance: Pours a near opaque, dark brown body with a full, cascading, and lasting, ivory-colored head. Sea foam lacing on the way down.
Smell: Aromatic blend of stewed, spiced fruit, liqueur, and chopped up chocolate cookies and candy bars.
Taste: First and foremost, it’s fruity, tasting of golden raisins, plum juice, and candied figs. Then you get some maltiness, mainly dark chocolate and nutty caramel. Hit of dark candi sugar. Not really much in the way of hops here. Touch of clove and nutmeg. Sip of creme de cocoa. Maybe a bit of fresh, oily orange zest. Finishes malty, sweet, and rather warming.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Moderately carbonated.
Drinkability: Paired very well with some Pinback mp3’s (particularly "Tripoli" and "Seville"). Full of flavor, rich complexities, and yet it’s easily accessible and generally readily available from coast to coast. What’s not the like? Although, I will say, I dug that ’Special Edition’ a bit more. That’s just me, though!
