BeerEssential (96), Massachusetts, USA Jun 17, 2008 Subtle raisin/fig/fruit scent. Deep, dark, opaque reddish-brown with a bubbly, off-white head that leaves some lacing, but not as much as I expected. Some carbonation, but it doesn’t hit you too hard. Taste is malty, fruity and alcoholic with no bitterness. Subtle finish. I’ve tasted many dubbels, and although it’s not my favourite style this one is quite good. texasbartender (160), Sugarland, Texas, USA Jun 16, 2008 The beer pours an amber red that’s so deep it is almost brown it has a good rocky head with large bubbles that settles slowly and leaves little lacing. The nose is light with a mix of caramel, some yeast, dark fruit and malts. The taste is rich; mixing sweet malts and dark fruit with alcohol and some bitterness. The beer is very tight in both flavor and palate making it rich but still balanced. A very good deep dark beer. kiefdog (1534), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 15, 2008 Updated: Apr 12, 200933cl bottle from Total Wine (Tampa). Pours a dark brown to black with a one finger head that is retained throughout consumption. Aroma: malt, candy sugar, alcohol, molasses, spice. Tastes sweet, malty, and sugary with hints of maple syrup. Full-bodied ale with a sweet, lingering finish. We tasted this bottle with a 33cl bottle of Westvleteren 12. The St. Bernardus had a creamier mouthfeel and was somewhat lighter in color than the Westy 12. The Westvleteren 12, however, was slightly better balanced than the St. Bernardus with a fuller-bodied mouthfeel, less sugar, and well-hidden alcohol. Given the history between these two beers, it is no wonder they are very similar. Both are exceptional ales. Aroma:Sweet dark fruits, sweet slight alcohol
Appearance:brown, cloudy
Flavor:Complex, fruity, plum
Palate:Full body,thick
Overall, this beer is a must have and complex flavors hide the alcohol well.
dalepryor (172), Paducah, Kentucky, USA Jun 14, 2008 had this many times which for me says a lot for a beer, many i haven’t returned to. This pours a very dark murky brown color, the aroma smells very fruity, i get mostly figs when i give it a good sniff. The Flavor is not as potent as the aroma unfortunately but it is damn good, it has heavy carbonation which i think masks the alcohol well, very easy to drink this one down. 12many (231), Ohio, USA Jun 14, 2008 A dark amber brown pour with lots of sweet dark fruits. Spectacular warming feel going down. Awesome. Bigmmartin (366), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jun 12, 2008 Updated: Jun 6, 2009Bottle: One of my favorite beers of all time. I had to revisit this one. Pouring this beer is an experience in itself. It has a dark brown color with a sweet alcohol aroma. There are raisins and other dark fruits. It is perfectly carbonated and feels amazing on the tongue. Extremely gratifying to drink. An excellent Abt/Quad. An essential beer. LilBeerDoctor (1480), East Setauket, New York, USA Jun 11, 2008 Bottle. Pours a murky brown with a super thick tan head. Ah, gorgeous. Aroma of grapes, champagne, raisins, dark fruit. Flavor of sweet dark fruits, Belgian yeast. A well-crafted beer, extremely well-balanced. The palate is superb - creamy, thick mouthfeel, almost as if you were drinking a milkshake. This quad is hard to beat.
