highibus (421), Mill Creek, Washington, USA Apr 19, 2008 Great fruity nose. Excellent color and slight tan head. Dark esters dominate and nice malt sweetness. Excellent trappist. nomad (12), Manchester, Greater Manchester, England Apr 19, 2008 Bottle from Carringtons. Dark brown wth tan head and surprisingly little lace. Not as full as you might expect in the mouth. Aroma of fruit, spice, banana and some bubblegum. All present in the flavour along with bread, caramel and cherries wrapped in a big boozy hit. People rave about this, I find it reliable but it’s never blown me away. emarkd (24), Georgia, USA Apr 17, 2008 750mL magnum. Cork pops with much less explosion than some of the other Belgiums I’ve had. Pours a deep chestnut with a large, rocky head, much larger than I expected when it opened so calmly. The aroma is very light and smooth with a sweet, fruity, yeasty character. The taste starts sweet and fruity, like raisins or dates. It quickly turns into a nice, malty mouthful with whiskey notes. The alcohol comes through strong in the finish and leaves a dry aftertaste. Very good. Bhops (329), Dallas, Texas, USA Apr 16, 2008 Having tried both in the same day, the st. bernardus 12 does not compare to the westy 12 in my opinion. But still very good. detroitsteel (231), Greater London, England Apr 16, 2008 Looked muddy, didn’t smell that great - but what a great tasty mouthfull. Malty, grapes, carob nuts, herbs (sort of). Easy to find and a good beer, a winning combo. nimbleprop (819), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA Apr 15, 2008 One of the quintessential Belgian beers. Pours from the 11.2oz bottle a nearly opaque deep maple brown color with a frothy, lacing dirty tan head. One of a kind aroma that has a strong sweet, candy aroma mixed with some sour yeastiness, with fruity aromas like grape and plum. Flavor is very similar with a strong sweet malt flavor that is a mix of hard candy and brown sugar. Flavor has more grain than I had imagined with a bit of barnyard funk to round things out. Medium mouthfeel with a lasting sweetness that hides the alcohol well. This brew is a lesson in balance all while maintaining it’s complexity. agl108 (503), Manayunk, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 15, 2008 11.2 oz. bottle at Flat Rock Saloon. Poured deep brown with fizzy off-white head. Flavor is complex with dark fruits, chocolate, caramel, and spices all present. Sweet and even a bit chewy. Alcohol unnoticeable. St. Bernardus monks are rad. stas1023nj (6), New Jersey, USA does not count Apr 14, 2008 An infamous brown beer; with an intricate robust taste that packs a punch, the best high test beer Iv’e had. Caution...a few of these and your standards are sure to drop.
