COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Pours amber brown. Not much carbonation. Looks fairly light bodied with little flecks of yeast or protein floating near the bottom. Smell is sweet and almost dr. Pepper in quality. No real hop presence. Mouthfeel is way thicker than the beer looked. Powerful complex taste. Very malty, fruity, with licorice, and a slightly earthy quality. Bitter finish with lingering spice. I'm not sure I would want to drink a while bottle myself. I give high praise for the complexity but I think I will need time to appreciate this beer more; as I appreciate but don't enjoy it as much. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours cloudy hazlenut dark brown with particles in suspension and small off white head. Aroma of ripe fruit, spices and a bit of booze. Taste is reminiscent of candy apple, with a sweetness and an acidic aspect running parallel. Nice.

Banana bread, spicy, sweet aroma with a touch of raisin/date. Ruddy brown to deep red with lasting thin head. Flavors are very complex Belgian signature spice without the fruitiness or pit-fruit notes often found in other Quads-Dubbels. Oddly enough you get a hint of herbal spicy hops on the finish. Bready oatmeal cookie malt notes dominate along with the spice. Unctuous mouthfeel is perfect. Overall it doesn’t disappoint. Excellent example of the style. Those hop notes are interesting, setting it apart from other examples.

2014 Magnum Bottle 1500ml by my self. Scent of Mazarin and yeast. Good fragrance. Easier hopped with a little yeast and a little alcohol but still good. Okay bitterness in the aftertaste that fills the upper part of the mouth briefly. Okay beer but does not feel so special anyway. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.

33cl bottle from my cellar. Pours a deep, cola brown color with a big fan head. Aroma is dark fruit, cherry, raisin, vanilla. Medium on the palate with creamy carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, nutty, raisin, bread, caramel, with a sweet, dark fruit finish. Excellent.

Bouteille de 750ml. Arôme sucré et bonbon. Apparence bourgogne intense presque opaque. En bouche, c’est très miel et caramel sans trop tomber sur le coeur. Côté belge un peu trop subtil a mon goût. Bonne bière à partager.

Has a very strong smell of caramel, burnt sugar and alcohol. Pours dark cloudy amber with a beige head. Tastes a lot of caramel and burnt sugar. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy.
