The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

330ml bottle, poured into Leffe chalice. Dark auburn colour, 90% opaque, one finger tanned head, decent retention, fair amount of lacing. Aroma was grape and booze, slightly musty. Tasted rasin, plum, fig, fudge, molasses and brown sugar. Quite boozy compared with Rochefort 10. Finish was slightly bitter and biscuity. Well carbonated, light body, smooth but had a slightly coarse edge from the booze. It seemed to mellow as it warmed, got less boozy and the carbonation dropped off slightly. A very good beer rather than a great beer, places below Rochefort 10.

0,33 bottle purchased and consumed in Kosovo in its original glass. Pours a reddish dark brown (chestnut skin) color, some sediments in the end (I have not poured it all) and a nice dark ivory foamy head. Nose: round and pleasant attack of dry fruit (prunes dominate the nose), fresh juicy black figs, fruity overall feel, hidden but perceivable hoppy bitterness. Mouth: what a joy to drink it during a winter evening! Juicy and chewy maltiness, dry fruits, good carbonation, some after taste pleasant alcohol notes, soul warming feel. Great beer.

Excellent quad, that is very bold in flavors and appearance without too much of an alcohol taste. I prefer however rochefort 10, which gives me a mire heavenly after feel

I had been dying ti try this beer and I finally got my hands on a bottle. It was poured into a Trappist glass and had a thick creamy head that dissipated slowly but left lots of lacing. The smell was malty but not overpowering. The aromas kind of disappears. I could hardly smell the alcohol though. The taste was malts and complex fruits and somewhat sweet like caramel or brown sugar but not too sweet either. Really nice to drink this beer as it warms. There’s a definite bitterness in the back, like a mild aftertaste but it only makes me want to drink it more. Hard to describe but reminds me of a Tannin taste from a wine, but not bad.. This quad feels smooth and slightly bubbly. It’s actually really nice to drink.

Bottle 0,75l, brown color with fast falling head. Aroma of raisins, soy sauce and alcohol. It has a nice balance of sweetness bitterness and some sourness, but still the beer is quite heavy and oily. Alcohol could be hidden better.

Bottle of 33cl, in a Trappist glass; room temperature. Very very good beer, not as good as the Westvleteren XII, but very good. Great appearance, but most of all, great taste of trappist yeast. Go get it !
