The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

330ml brown bottle shared with Gilvanblight and PandoraGreen, Pub Italia, Ottawa. Dark brown pour, small tan head. Almond, nutty, chocolate malt aroma. Flavour is deeply choclately. Alcohol blended in nicely. Carbonation seemed light and restrained. A big but not overpowering beer.

Purchased bottle in Namur, BE. Head not as full, might have been a batch issue. Fantastic taste, in a typical Trappist style. Just a little too sweet but balanced with the Belgian hops. Worth the search! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From a bottle bought at the Vineyard, Belfast. Not a lot of aroma, looks fantastically thick and dark with a mild head but it has a lovely molasses-like taste (but not sweet) and it has a lingering finish. This is a really good beer.

On tap in Budapest. Fig and sweet cinnamon bread. Light caramel sugary sticky molasses very light and mischievious because I know it?s 10%. Creamy finish sweet and light crisp snap. Really nice quad kinda light and friendly, but that should mean that it?s bomb as fuck, right?

Bottle. Brown color, thick off-white head that stays there for a while. Rich sweet aroma, with some caramel and raisin. Complex full taste, sweet and spicy start with hoppy light bitter finish. just shut up, drink and enjoy this amazing beer.

Aroma: Rich, sweet, malty, dried fruit, raisin, caramel. Appearance: Dark amber, head medium high, stiff and durable. Taste: Sweet, dried fruit, caramel, some spicy notes, raisin, plum, alcohol not feelable, bitterness very low at first with time gets bit stronger and turns to medium level, herbal hoppy notes. Palate: finish is semi-dry, carbonation is high, body is full, alcohol lightly warming.

While I’ve had their Christmas Ale, this is my first ever try of their ABT 12. My expectations were fairly high, and I don’t think they were quite met. It looks the part, with its muddy brown body, with reddish hi-lights in the glass. The nose however is a letdown, with a hint of bready malts, and some dark fruit peels. The palate is surprisingly on the tingly crisp side, and not velvety smooth like I was expecting. Still interesting though. The tastes are concentrated more on the red fruit peels, and grapes side of the fence. There is a bit of the bready malts in the mix, but they are very subdued from what I was expecting. This isn’t punching in the same weight class as Westvleteren 12 and Rochefort 10, but once you get your mind wrapped around that, it’s a pretty decent beer. Might fall into the one-time enjoyment category however, as I doubt I’d reach for it again when beer shopping.
