The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Absolutely delicious. Rich and creamy with a strong caramel aroma. Perfectly balanced, boozy and decadent. Perfect dessert beer.

From my previous experience with quadrupels, I had decided that I did not like the style. Not really excited about ever trying the rather dear Westvletern 12, until someone points out that the St Bernardus Abt would be very close to the iconic W12, and much more affordable. As I had particularly enjoyed other products of this brewery, I had a go. And now everything has changed. If quadrupels are really like this, then I want more. This dark amber beer has those fruits in the cellar holding the main backbone of the aroma and taste. An explosion of apples, plums, peaches and apricots, old books and wooden crates, wicker baskets and dusty curtains, dark empty wine bottles and firewood. It’s all so round and timeless, with sweet malts, vanilla and yeast…roasted almonds…wine… prunes…honey … wow! So perfectly crafted, altogether the flavours are well-mended, nothing standing out or overshadowing each other, with a reasonably dry finish, smooth, one would never dream of the high ABV hadn’t it been so famous.

Bottle. Now this is one of my Belgian classic favorites, next to Orval. And much better (and I dare to say more complex), than it’s secret rejected cousin Westvleteren 12. In the aroma I find sweet malts, toffee/caramel, dark fruit, raisons, sweet alcohol, some spices maybe. Taste is complex but well balanced. The alcohol is present but not overwhelming. Drink it from the 75 or 150 cl bottles; it’s even better.

Bottle. Dark amber-brown with a lasting, creamy off-white head. The aroma is balanced nicely between fruit and malt, with some spices and yeast. The flavor is sweet malt, honey, fruits, caramel, a little bitterness and a warming alcohol finish. Great beer, I know we get this back in Tasmania so I’ll definitely be getting this again.

Black beer with a small white head. Smells like caramel and strong alcohol. Taste is caramel, fruits strong herps. A fantastic beer, not so good as a westvleter?

Aromat piwa nieco winny, słodowy nad wyraz klasyczny i bardzo dobry bez udziwnień - nigdy takiego nie piłem. Ponadto pomarańcza w zapachu i smaku. Dochodzi do tego zapach stodoły i wsi :) Karmelowość i ukryta słodycz nadaje temu piwu dużo gładkości a jednocześnie pijalności. Później odczuwalne nuty sterylne jak najbardziej na miejscu

One of the greats. Nice aroma dark fruits, vanilla, banana bread.. Appearance is so so.. Merky brown with a low head. Palate is top notch.. Sharp and smooth. Tates is complex and rich super balanced with a bitter finish. Hides the high alcohol well.

Bottle at home split with sarah. In a goblet glass. Bottle is about 4 years old. Had this a few times before.

Aroma is apple and raisin cake, vinous notes, unrefined sugars, christmas pudding. muscavado sugar.

Clear caramel burnt orange coloured pour with a lasting fine cream head.

Flavour is full and rich with cakey , caramel malts, delicate pinchs of spices and nice fruity raisin apple. Very little age character to it. Has aged very well. Nice vinous quality to it. Lingering complex sugars and fruits.

Palate is semi-sweet, semi-dry in the finish and high tingling carbonation. Nicely attenuated.

Really very good. My second facourite Quad after Rochefort 10.

Nice appearance, dark honey or copper. Relatively low carbonation, and very smooth. Caramel with subtle banana flavor, followed by raisin and fig.

Has aroma of dark malts and brown sugar. The color is dark copper, it’s hazy, with small head and awesome lacing. In taste it’s also quite sweet with malty notes. It’s very smooth because of low carbonation. The alcohol is covered quite well, but it’s warm the throat so quickly. After few seconds it’s starting to pinch the esophagus and warm you quite nicely. Then you can feel the alcohol much clearer. In the end in the aftertaste and aroma the notes of sweet fruits (dehydrated plums, raisins) appear. The bouquet is so rich.

Pours a dark mahogany with an off white head. The nose is hint of raisins and malt. The palate is full bodied with malt sweetness, slight caramel, and a slight bitter hop aftertaste.
