The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic íQuadrupelí style of Belgiumís best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. Itís a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Aroma: Rich, sweet, malty, dried fruit, raisin, caramel. Appearance: Dark amber, head medium high, stiff and durable. Taste: Sweet, dried fruit, caramel, some spicy notes, raisin, plum, alcohol not feelable, bitterness very low at first with time gets bit stronger and turns to medium level, herbal hoppy notes. Palate: finish is semi-dry, carbonation is high, body is full, alcohol lightly warming.

While Iíve had their Christmas Ale, this is my first ever try of their ABT 12. My expectations were fairly high, and I donít think they were quite met. It looks the part, with its muddy brown body, with reddish hi-lights in the glass. The nose however is a letdown, with a hint of bready malts, and some dark fruit peels. The palate is surprisingly on the tingly crisp side, and not velvety smooth like I was expecting. Still interesting though. The tastes are concentrated more on the red fruit peels, and grapes side of the fence. There is a bit of the bready malts in the mix, but they are very subdued from what I was expecting. This isnít punching in the same weight class as Westvleteren 12 and Rochefort 10, but once you get your mind wrapped around that, itís a pretty decent beer. Might fall into the one-time enjoyment category however, as I doubt Iíd reach for it again when beer shopping.

Grande bevuta.

Pretty much the perfect Belgian. Sweet Belgian taste, just enough malt, although a relatively high ABV, the alcohol is anything but overpowering.

Bottle poured into original glass. Very dark brown with a bit of light brown foam. Lots of lacing. Caramel, raisin and plum aroma. Sweet taste with a kick from the alcohol. Really great beer! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

It is dark amber in color with ruby highlights. The initials aromas of malt and dark fruits. There are also aromas of grass and some yeast. It has a vinous flavor with dark fruits, grass, floral elements, yeast, and bready malts, It is moderate as a body, with a dry finish and pleasant alcohol warming. It is moderate high in carbonation.

Cioccolato, nocciola, frutta secca, amarene sciroppate. Meravigliosa.
