The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

light shows a deep reddish mahogany coloring that is beautiful. And incredibly frothy, four-finger head takes it’s sweet time dissipating. Lacing is prevalent and thick. Wow. Figs, raisins, cherries hit on the very tip of the nose but quickly becomes a strong rum soaked scent. There’s a sweet bread character lurking in the background. Very sweet overall and almost wine like. Phenols are blossoming left and right. Extremely complex and heavy on the nose. The sweet raisin and fig notes carry well on the front of the tongue and they dominate the top of the palate. The a strong sweet bread character on the center of the tongue that starts to blossom in warming alcohol at the end. The sugar shines on the center but doesn’t carry to powerfully to not let the bread character shine. I’m impressed by the alcohol lightness. Very, very carbonated and I think that helps the flavors move better than the would otherwise. Things could be quite strong without the powerful carbonation and it makes sense here. A wonderful example of the Quad as a style and a new favorite. The complex flavors here are wonderful and this is something I could sip on many nights.

Pours golden amber with a highly aggressive head. The usual caramel, malt and hints of honey. Strong alcohol presence is nice on a cold day and lingers through to a warm glow at the finish.

750ml bottle aged 2 years. Beautiful mahogany pour with a big creamy tan cap that lasts FOREVER and leaves beautiful lace. Lots of Belgian yeast and spice on the nose; banana bread, steeped plums and prunes and grapes. This stuff is smoother than me talking to a pretty girl. Taste is sweet and dry, boozy but balanced. Next to Rochefort this is probably the best Abt I’ve tried, and worthy of all the hype it’s gotten.

Mahogany brown color, creamy beige head. Belgian yeast nose, candi sugar, raisins, malty, hints of coffee and cloves. Rich malty taste, candi sugar, anise, Belgian yeast, hints of alcohol and marzipan. Full body, soft to average carbonation.

Wow. This is just great. Even my non-beer-drinking wife thinks so. Dark brown amber in color. Dried fruits on the aroma. A full flavor palate - there’s so much going on here - date, fig, raisin, candy sugar, malt. Yet so balanced. Smooth, sweet, crisp. Very little bite from the high ABV. Really, really good.

You can read all the other comments regarding the smells, looks, etc, im only going to say, this beer is excellent, you simply can't go wrong with this one. Some of the best examples of what a Belgium beer is. Highly recommended.

330-mL bottle bought in Belgium, poured into a wine glass. Deep brown color with orange hues. Beige bubbly head which fades off rather quickly leaving nothing behind. Aromas of plums, raisins, biscuits, Belgian yeast, a hint of alcohol, and a nice herbal hoppiness in the back. Brilliant nose! On the palate, fresh hops upfront, followed by caramel, dark fruits and yeast. Bittersweet finish with herbal hops. Smooth, with no traces of alcohol. An amazing beer, but I still prefer the hoppier profile of the Westvleteren 12.

Donkerbruin bier met beige schuimkraag. Geur: moutzoetig, brood, kandij, pruimen, alcoholisch en zelfs wat anijs. Smaak: zoetig, dadels, wat anijs en vleugje zout. Mooie balans. Medium koolzuurprikkel. Redelijk volmondig. Afdronk: warm alcoholisch en zoetig, karamel.
