COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

light shows a deep reddish mahogany coloring that is beautiful. And incredibly frothy, four-finger head takes it’s sweet time dissipating. Lacing is prevalent and thick. Wow. Figs, raisins, cherries hit on the very tip of the nose but quickly becomes a strong rum soaked scent. There’s a sweet bread character lurking in the background. Very sweet overall and almost wine like. Phenols are blossoming left and right. Extremely complex and heavy on the nose. The sweet raisin and fig notes carry well on the front of the tongue and they dominate the top of the palate. The a strong sweet bread character on the center of the tongue that starts to blossom in warming alcohol at the end. The sugar shines on the center but doesn’t carry to powerfully to not let the bread character shine. I’m impressed by the alcohol lightness. Very, very carbonated and I think that helps the flavors move better than the would otherwise. Things could be quite strong without the powerful carbonation and it makes sense here. A wonderful example of the Quad as a style and a new favorite. The complex flavors here are wonderful and this is something I could sip on many nights.

Bottle 330ml (2015) – cellared for 1 year. Served at room temperature. Pours a murky, dark brown with a ruby tint. Head is large, beige, and is mostly lasting. Aroma is of herbaceous hops; wholegrain bread, Belgian candy sugar, overripe dark plums, raisins, pears skins, caramel, dried leaves, coriander, cinnamon and pepper. Flavour is exceptionally smooth with a light herbaceous-hop bitterness; lightly toasted wholegrain bread, dried currants, dried blueberries, plums, cooked brown sugar, dried leaves, hints of dark chocolate and notes of black pepper in the finish. Full bodied with medium carbonation, oily texture and a long, warming finish. An unbelievably smooth and well balanced Belgian Quad!

Gushing, Browm, nice head, high carbonation. Aroma: some strange tart notes, caramel, dark fruits. Heavy sweetness, full body. Taste: dark fruits, bread, esters, even some chocolate. Some bitterness at finish and lots of alcohol. Quite balanced.

Not really my kind of beer at the first taste, but became more pleasant after a few more. Mildly bitter taste. I also believe I’ve tasted a nuance of vanilla. On the contrary to what every says, I think the alcohol taste is quite prominent. However, it is a pleasant level. Be sure to try it out ;)

Fruity aroma, dark brown color, nice beige head. I like it, it is very strong but you cannot sense the alcohol. But I got drunk after one.

I will have to try this one again, and get better tasting notes. I was out with family in a crowded small bar when I got this. I just remember it was one of my all time favorite beers.

This is a favorite beer. It just works. It is on the expensive side but well worth a try. It’s considered one of the best and it is the best.
